First Pick: SoM MTGO Draft PT1 + PT2

Postby Graham » 13 Jun 2011, 02:40

As requested, a two-parter with drafting and playing separated. Also, a better mic, and higher quality video. Yay!

Do we do well? Not amazingly. But hey! Fun times!

Part 1 here.

Part 2 here.

Your drafting techniques are, uh, unique, I guess. It was fun to watch, if a bit frustrating at your lack of focus. I doubt I could do much better, though. I'm definitely looking forward to more of these :D

Again, fun to watch guys. Hopefully you can get some more packs and have some better luck next time.

I'm not sure if you want feedback on plays/picks, so sorry if you don't and I won't in future, but for now; I think picking up the crusader should have put you into white, and then the glimmerpoint stag and skyguard should have been picks, and making the deck blue/white. Other than that I think most of the picks were OK, but you really need to decide which 2 colours you are in by the third pack, not when you get to deck construction! :P
Then in game one, you should have volt charged the cobra, since if he doesn't block with the crusader he's dead next turn if he attacks and doesn't draw a creature, plus you have the spire monitor to chump block for two turns to keep him in the same situation.

Whenever more than one person is involved in decision making in draft, the result is always an unfocused mess. I think that's just the way those things go.

I've been doing a bunch of draft simulations on http://draft.bestiaire.org/ and it seems like every SoM draft, about half the players go B/G infect. Maybe that's just the AI algorithm for that site, but it sure does seem like a powerful archetype.

(On a side note, for kicks I did an Ice Age, Alliances, Homelands draft and holy crap do nearly all of those cards suck.)

you should try Fraps for the recording. works really well even to test it with the free version

awesome draft too having draft+play as separate is a great idea. i'd prefer watching just the play.

Hmm, well that was odd. It seamed for awhile there you were going to end up colourless and having never had that many artifacts I don't know how viable that would have been but considering how un-focused the draft was it may have been an option, I don't know.

Still, enjoyable to watch but I prefered the other draft cause in this one it seamed you were basically screwed from the offset (and it was very noticeable in the tone of your voices) whereas the other one had more hope and less gloom in it.

Anyway, here's hoping you actually get past the first round in your next draft!

Side note: so what did you get for those rare drafts? :)

I don't think I should watch these because I can't even hear your commentary over me yelling at the computer screen about which card to take.

Not sure how to feel about that.

I know! I would've Volt Charged then dropped your other Juggernaut.

But then again, I would've gone U/G infect/proliferate. I mean, you got passed the big Proliferate enchantment,

Next time you do one of these video's can you take a minute to explain how draft's work? Basically, what it takes to enter a draft, how the choosing works, and how it is decided who plays who, and what happens when you win. Or can you tell me where I can find that info? That would work too.

Also, I love these magic video's, please keep making them. I would play the online game if I wasn't as poor as dirt.

I hope they do go on - they're useful for new players (like me) to see what's involved at higher levels of play. I've certainly found myself looking at packs deciding what card I would pick based on your experiences :D
