More proof that a smart person can make anything sound like a good idea, no matter how dumb. It's all in the marketing.

Ah, the memories of DOS 3.1 and that monochrome brown/yellow screen.

Re: NEW VIDEO - The New Old Thing
All throughout the video, I was like "Eh..."
It was okay and had the humor and polish I've come to expect out of a Paul-written LRR video, but there just wasn't anything that really jumped out at me as being especially funny...
And then...
That stinger! I loved it! The stinger made the whole video!

Nope, it was clearly Paul's hair.

Yikes, better hope my bosses never catch wind of this video... they would honestly consider the switch if it would save them money.
Cool video though. Maybe a bit more depressingly realistic than laugh out loud funny, but it works.

Re: NEW VIDEO - The New Old Thing
There will always be "legacy" concerns when changing OSes. If there aren't drivers for, say, their fancy printers or such, in MS-DOS, then they'd need to go out and buy old printers and probably pin-bar paper.Omega Lairon wrote:Yikes, better hope my bosses never catch wind of this video... they would honestly consider the switch if it would save them money.

I miss DOS, all the fun commands, the monochromatic experience, the um... other things. This video was definitely C:lrr/video/humour/funny.exe
I may not be funny or witty, but that does not make me less strange.

Re: The New Old Thing
Only problem with DOS is that your C and D keys wear out quickly.
Also, if you install DOS and then put Windows 3.1(Or 9x) on top of it, you can browse the internet, although most websites will probably look really strange.
Anyway, great video, guys! And actually, a good argument for DOS. XD

Re: The New Old Thing
I liked the whole video but the stinger really just put an excellent cap on the whole thing. I especially loved Kathleen's delivery at the end.
MS DOS was mostly before my time, but I do remember having to boot up Windows 95 in MS DOS mode whenever I wanted to play the original Oregon Trail. I think it was an old bargain bin copy. It actually played in normal Windows 95 but with no sound. And what's Oregon Trail without the beep boops?

Nope, 3.1 doesn't have internet access (that was maybe 3.11) and you can't install 9x on top of DOS. 9x kind of has DOS running below it, but is an independent system, and, to be technical about it, is 32bit while DOS is 16.

Re: The New Old Thing
I'm pretty sure DOS supported telnet and other early internet protocols, they just wouldn't have had web support (seeing as the HTTP protocol didn't publicly exist prior to '91).
When it comes to the web, I know Mosiac was ported to Windows 3.11, and I think it may have worked on 3.1 as well.

I'm surprised Kathleen didn't bring up Paul's hair style when pointing out old-fashioned things he has.

I remember reading somewhere that for a long time, 9x could only be installed on top of DOS(Before the CD version of Win9x came out).
I'll look it up later.

Right, the web didn't exist, but BBSs and stuff like that did, my bad. I think windows 3 had TCP/IP as a plugin, not part of the core system, it was kind of an afterthought when the web was being born and moving out of academia.

Ugh, the terrible "Fiddling With WINSOCK"
But great video; the stinger was the real laugh moment - the video itself was more the kind of creepy/awesome feeling I get when Graham pulls out his Truthseeker character.
...Paul DID make a compelling case for the downgrade, which Kathleen delivered AMAZINGLY WELL.
So an...entertaining video, if not Laugh-Out-Loud... and then the stinger lived up to its name!
Oh, and here's a little 'Olde Time Horror Story' to clew up with:

Re: The New Old Thing
I spent a lot of time using MS-DOS 7.0
I think I still remember most of the commands.
