James Masterson School for Dictatorial Improvement

Postby Graham » 29 Apr 2005, 17:33

So, the James Masterson name isn't a joke (where did we get that from?), but almost everything else is.

For example, the Five-year Plan... yeah, it's a communism joke.

Anyway, this came about because Morgan had a good idea for an infommercial about torture, and Jer looks good in the Che hat. Then we all brainstormed, and voila!

"The women were JUST TALKING left right and center!"

Fucking gold-inlaid platinum with diamond highlights.

Is it just me, or is every word out of Morgan's mouth pure unmarked currency?

Brilliant.

What does the text at the end of the video say? The video quality is not good enough to make it out. I think the first line says "The Great Dictator made in 1941 by Charlie Chaplin was ...

That one was pretty good. The audio quality wasn't as good as usual, but the political references were well done and the costumes were great. It kind of surprised me that LRR would do something a bit political, but i guess no topic is safe from the people who sing musicals and eat dog food  Was this also inspired by the dictators video in the Rock the Vote competition? Or is that just a coincidence?

Coincidence. Entirely. Coincidence.

I like the wriring on this one, and I think a lot of that is from the great amount of idea bouncing that went on that night. I mean, there are five people in the wiring credits ;).

I don't know why the audio was so bad, I did everything I could.
Meaning, "You should have heard it BEFORE!"

Still, I wouldn't call this "political" so much as "political humour". We're certainly not taking a stance on anything. Communism is funny!

I guess the US flag thing, maybe. But that actually happened when they toppled Sadam's statue. Oops! (It got removed quickly).
And the Cambodian bit. Yeah. awkward...

Glad you like it.

Apart from the "Just Talking" (which I'm happy to claim) Morgan's lines come courtesy of Kathleen.

And, LordCrusher, the text at the end, is an essay about a movie called "The Great Dictator". I found it by googling "dictator essay". I don't know, I needed something. Read it, here if you like.

Whoa-whoa-whoa! The bit about assembling the wall of corpses for no conceivable purpose was totally added in my edit of Kathleen's original brillinace. Collaborative writing ;).

Sheer brilliance. I gotta say Morgan had an awesome idea and Jer was just the shindig in the Che rip-off.

Paul cracked me up in his prisoner role. He truly had the smile of someone who'd get beat up if he screwed again.

Yeah, I have to agree with headbomb. I really thought Paul played that role perfectly. It wouldn't have been better with anyone else.

Heh....I recognize those sculls from the Paris Labyrinths. :P

The dictator reference manual... is that a UVic coursepack? I'd so take that course.

Hee! to the course in "living forever". But it's missing the music course, guys. Once, I saw this totally hilarious music video for the five-year plan. It has dancing red guards singing about how great the crops are growing and about industrial production going up five percent. The weirdest thing is, it was on a karaoke compilation VCD.

And the last time I went to China, I noticed Mao's picture still showed up on billboards... only it wasn't so much "cult of personality" - it was more "advertisement for real estate".

That's all for the communist fun facts of the day.

My Uncle just saw the video, and asks if that reference manual is a rally guide? He says all the columns and sizes of text match up.
