Musicians
So, who here is one?
I'm a guitarist/singer for an acoustic rock band that consists of... Me... I picked acoustic rock because I was unable to find people able and interested in doing a full band. Unlike most acoustic guitarists, I use a heavy pick. Some don't like the sound of a pick, but it works for me. Plus, the way I learned was on an electric and old habits die hard.
My singing needs work, I can do pretty well at low volumes but quickly go flat.
I also play some piano.
How about the lot of you?

I play theremin, tho' I'm out of practice.
I recently got into KORG-DS 10 Synthesizer for the DS & have been composing here & there, but mostly just playing around.

Re: Musicians
I play the upright bass, the ocarina, and have dabbled in the theremin. I used to sing, but lately I just pop in for guest spots on cds. I'm heavily involved in the local punk and metal scene, so I'm constantly surrounded by and doing things with musicians (no, not those kinds of things). Tomorrow is the award show! JAGERRRRRRRRR. mmm.

Re: Musicians
I play saxophone (alto and tenor), and have been for about 12 years. Before that, I started on piano in 1st grade, but haven't seriously played that since about 10 years ago.
All the way through undergrad I took my playing pretty seriously and was heavily involved in jazz band and various other groups.
Now, being in math grad school, I play more for fun. There are a few cool jam sessions in Seattle that I look forward to on a weekly basis that give me motivation to work up a few new tunes, etc.

I'm a drummer in college. Second year of it now and already my lecturer said I'm at a university level of drumming. Because there are few drummers, I also do some session work with a few bands.

I played trombone in high school for four years, but I stopped because... well because my face is wrong. Still have my horns though.
I play bass now (poorly).

Re: Musicians
In bands I usually sing & play bass (fretted/fretless/upright), or occassionally guitar or stick. I can fumble my way through on keys and drums, but usually just in the studio. I've been composing music for various stuff for the past 10 years or so just as a hobby - for short films, TV, games and so on. I've written music in most genres but music I write for myself generally varies from light, ambient rock to dark industrial electro-weirdness.
Music is my favourite hobby and definitely something I'd think about doing full-time if the planets aligned the right way etc. I especially love doing soundtrack work.

Not entirely sure what you mean; but at a guess I'd say what you might be looking for is something like a tracker - such as ModPlug or Skale. I personally started composing using Fast Tracker 2 back in the day (Skale is a modern redux of FT2).iEatNinjaZ wrote:Anyone know of an 8 bit looping program?

Re: Musicians
I learned piano when I was 7 because my dad was a musician and wanted me to have a strong foundation in music theory and musical in general. Then is 6th grade I learned trombone and it was awesome. Then in high school I won a scholarship to learn how to play organ.
I still play piano and trombone every now and then and I continued to take organ lessons in college, but its one of those instruments that you need one to practice so I haven't played in awhile.

I'm a composer mostly. I do play electric Bass and can kind of play Keyboard.
I recently bought a cello and hope to be taking lessons soon. Now if only the damned thing stayed in tune. Silly friction pegs.

Re: Musicians
I have a guitar, and have a good enough knowledge of chords to pass as a backing musician. I can sing.. sort of... mostly by learnt by ear. I've always wanted to learn piano, but never managed to because of very nasty music teachers expecting me to understand the keyboard at an early age.

Re: Musicians
I started playing the harmonica recently, and I play lots of little goofy things on the piano, but that's about it.
Re: Musicians
I've been playing bass for quite a while now, I write about half the music and most of the lyrics in my band Scuurvy.

Used to play the clarinet... dabbled in piano, idly.
Words are my music, these days. Born from it, evoking it, mimicking it, even inspiring it in one or two cases.
I also build music, digitally. It appeals to my meticulous nature.

Re: Musicians
I wouldn't call myself a musician as I'm far too surrounded real musicians to say that.(All my best mates bar one are musos) I play lead guitar and sing lead\backup in a Blues\Alt Rock band called Bad Little Scooter. We've been having trouble finding the time to practice, but we're finally back together again so personally I'm very much looking forward to the band rehearsals again.
Having watched some of the local competition, technically they're way out of my skill range (Generic Rock\Solos and HARDCORE METALZ) but just based on genre I believe our band has a chance out there due to diversity.
When it comes to song writing, it's pretty much a 50\50 split between the founder of our band and Synth\Guitar\Lead vocalist and myself. Our drummer's pretty kickarse and makes it look easy. Our bassist is so sporadically available though, it's frustrating.
Time wise on guitar, I've technically been playing on and off for 3 years, actual skill wise it's probably about 2 months worth of practice\knowledge. Singing I've only started to really try in the past year, I've had previous experience with my school production though so I've had some practice\training.
