We need to go back to horses and carts! They never run out of gas!

When the sun goes red giant, its going to expand to about the orbit of Mars. While some theorize that the weakening gravitational pull will let Earth swing out into a wider orbit that it can survive, it will still be utterly uninhabitable by then. Its not even worth thinking beyond the red giant phase.

That's why I used the wording "take out" rather than "engulf". The sun itself will be much larger, and the plasma bands reaching out will be much larger as well. Add in increased solar winds, the flammable gasses on the gas giants; it's a recipe for destruction. I'm just sad I won't be around to watch it.

Well the sun is going to be around for the next coupla billion years.

Plasma toroids don't work yet but with so much resources being poured into it it won't be more than a decade or two.
This is why I plan to mine the moon it's rocks are naturally rich in the "heavy helium" required on tokomaks
PS geothermal is great for the countries that have it.

One of my comp-sci friends was working on a model of a non-Tokamak fusion reactor for some crazy Russian physicist. It sounded pretty cool, and viable.

It's still not a permanent solution. Yes, it will outlast us, but so will the Uranium.

UPDATE
So it tursn out that the maffia wasn't gonna waste a ship doing someone elses work; they decided to combine it with some of their own buisness.
The divers who were examining one of the ships found at least 2 bodies in it.
