Sarcastic Font

or

Sorta 'reverse italics' to denote sarcasm.

Now, all we have to do is get everyone to install 'sarcastic-enabled' versions of fonts and we're all set!
(Boy...here's a one statement where a sarcastic font would've helped.)

Props to Genghis Ares for spotting this and mentioning it in another thread! Image

Well, I posted the link. But I thought metcarfre mentioned needing a sarcastic font.

Um...is my aging memory playing up again? Wasn't it Jer that made the statement that "Sarcasm is lost on the Internet" or similar? Image

Yeah, but seeing as I thought the site was cool enough to mention independently in the forums, so I wasn't thinking of a specific instance.

'Course, if you want to feel this has been directed at you, be my guest! ;)

...hmm, the most recent news over there is dated 2004, so I'm sure [sarcasm]that worked well.[/sarcasm]

Perhaps we should use a special font color or something.

Let's See:

Those pants look good on you.
You are so pretty.
I think you're just so clever.
It's not you, it me.

I just assume that everything everyone says over the internet is in a sarcastic tone.

Oh and you can just call me Dave.

I sorta like how Graham asked Paul over the forums when he sees him in real life.
"When I feel my friends have been conspiring against me, I break into their bedrooms and I write in their diaries."

I assume everyone on the internet is always totally serious, thus justifying my frequent righteous indignation and long-winded rants about why everyone other than me is dumb.

Sarcastic font would help, especially in Huckleberry Finn, maybe it will stop people from getting outraged! (Man do I wish I had some sarcastic font...)

Of course, I've stated previous to this thread that popularized methods of conveying intonation and other subtleties of meaning within text-only media already exist.

Glad to see that everyone is aware of what is right under their noses. ;-P

Sure we can. Custom BB Codes are a part of phpBB3. It would be easy to set up a [sarcasm] tag that changes the text color (or does any other desired formatting). The only question is: what do we want it to be?

/// I love talking to you ///
I love talking to you
I love talking to you
~I love talking to you~
:!: I love talking to you :!:
The following is sarcasm-> I love talking to you <-The preceding was sarcasm

It could even be a different font.

The real trick is that if we implement something like this, people have to actually use it. Because sarcasm becomes less funny the more you point it out, I suspect that some people will not use the tags in order to try to be subtle, and thereby invalidate the whole thing. I think the only way it will work is if we band together as a forum and decide to take everything someone says at face value unless they use the tags.

For instance, if someone says: "Glad to see that everyone is aware of what is right under their noses", then we should conclude that this person is genuinely happy to that everyone is well informed.

Oh. Then no.

I can specify the backwards italic typeface all I want, but unless everyone has it installed on their computer, they won't see it. Such is the problem with fonts on the internet.

I think if you order everyone to do it, they will.

I for one would love a sarcasm, thingie.

Sold!

I actually have no useful suggestion.
Also, I agree with your postulation on people not using it.
