Libraries! Founts of knowled- wait, whats that? (nsfw?)
Ahh, don't you love libraries? Filled with such interesting books like
Awesome, I wonder what its about!
Lets keep looking and see what else we find!
Huh, that sounds interesting, now I can know where that horrible smell is coming from.
Moving on!
awesome, nothing else needs to be said.
Oh I'm sure you are... Maybe you should read this book too:
with a monocle.
Wow, these books sure are awesome! I wonder what else you can find at this sacred and magical pool of all human knowledge, that is a college library...
what? well, thats not SOO weird, it's probably a weird play or something.. Lets just forget about it and move on shall we?
...WHAT?
*scurries away*
erm..well, I guess people need to know...
Ok what the fuck is this?
*puts that down, picks up the next one*
I quit.

You can find all sorts of weird shit in a library. Just takes some searching. The hardest part is not busting up into uproarious laughter when pure comedic gold is found. Y'know, so as not to disturb all them studious library types.

Yea! I've noticed, I've worked in a library for nearly two years. First a public one and now the university library. I think I'm going to post all the funny books I find if people want me too, and I invite others to post ones they find.
Also, Nascar romance novels.

You know something scary though? I won't open any books in that library anymore. The first one I opened had a funny looking guy with really reflective sunglasses on the front, and that's it. Inside were pictures of penises, closed that book damn quick. That was in the photography section, in a completely different section (a whole floor different) I opened a random book...and its a picture of a naked old lady.
Never looking in a book in that library again.
and, here's another:

I live five minutes' walk from Bookbarn, the largest used book store in Britain: it's a series of massive warehouses, and there are a lot of weird obscure books in there somewhere. I might go back and see if I can get away with using my camera to record some of the more entertaining. Or I might just buy a few, purely for the amusing reaction when someone sees my bookshelf.

It's an examination of a specific toxin from 'maquira calophylla' (plant? parasite? my biology sucks)
They are pretty good; uni libraries can be a riot in that you'll find the most obscure "I'll just do my doctorate on this weird-ass subtopic because then I'll know no one is writing (or has already written) on it." that then gets PUBLISHED.
I should take a stroll over to the QE2 library when I'm off - borrow my folks' digital camera, and come back with some good ones...what? I'm an alumnus.

Based on a little digging on wikipedia:
The referred organism is a type of tree in the same family as mulberry and fig, and it's subfamily includes the Panama rubber plant, so I'd expect that this tree is perhaps agriculturally important for natural rubber production. Cardenolides are basically a plant steroid that (and you were correct here) has heart arresting properties. Interesting, though, is that this cardenolide is "cytotoxic" which means literally toxic to cells. I don't know if this refers specifically to cardiac cells or if it just happens to be a cardenolide that is also toxic to other cells.
Another interesting note: the chemical that makes monarch butterflies toxic to predators is actually a cardenolide that the caterpillar ingests and stores when it is feeding on the toxic milkweed plant.

@Mimm: Please, please tell me that total doesn't include uni textbooks. Otherwise I may have to swim the Atlantic.

I've found some great deals on used textbooks over Chapters (as in, under $20, and in near-mint condition).

Wow... my college library only had hidden graphic novels.
ALSO! I'm interested in knowing what it is exactly that "How Porcupines Make Love" left out that warranted "How Porcupines Make Love II"

Re: Libraries! Founts of knowled- wait, whats that? (nsfw?)
Sadly, there is a reason I only post titles, not to ruin it or anything, but "How Porcupines Make Love" the series..there's three... Is actually "designed to make teachers aware of reader-response theory and its implications for literature instruction and curriculum."
And even some of the other ones (with an exception to "Clean asshole poems" NOO fucking clue what that's about) actually aren't that bad when you read the synopsis...but the titles are hilarious.

I just noticed...
That book says "How Porcupines Make Love II"
2!
Why would they need a sequel?
