DJ Fatbee's LoadingReadyRadio is OFFLINE!
DJ Fatbee's LoadingReadyRadio is OFFLINE!
So, as one or two of you may have noticed, I like to DJ on the radio. The format seems really pleasant to me, and spinning discs (or hard drive platters, as the case may be) is a lot of fun, plus I get to listen to music. I've just moved away from the station I used to DJ at (Try as I might, I couldn't stretch a mic cable all the way from Alaska to Arizona), but being an engineer, I figured I could solve that problem.
So, enter the world of Icecast, a free, streaming radio server that runs cheerfully on any old Linux box you can get your hands on. I happen to have a Linux machine on my network that has more than enough horsepower for this sort of thing, and so the idea was born.
I am running this independently of LRR (The acronym, while convenient, probably won't stick around) using my own hardware and bandwidth, but I thought it would be a fun way to contribute back to the community, along the lines of Ask an Alex, or the endless honking of Lavos. For now, the format will be live shows when I feel like running the server, including mic breaks, requests, and all the stuff that goes along with a radio show, without ads, of course.
So, what's this thread for? Well, a few things. First, it's the announcement that I'm going to be doing this. Second, it's a gauge for interest - I'm going to do it anyway and throw links around here and there, but I would like to see how many people I can expect to be interested. Third, it's for you, the people, to make requests!
My first show will be this weekend (NO LONGER PROBABLY SATURDAY), afternoon or evening Mountain time, and I will post up the information on connecting to my server then. Icecast is very easy to connect to, if you have Winamp or VLC, you're golden. I think there's a way to get iTunes to talk as well, but I haven't worked it out quite yet.
The final thing I want to put here (Sorry this is so dry - I'm a little tired, and it's rather warmer here in Arizona than I'm used to, my brain is melting a bit) is that if you, yes you for some reason want to DJ too, provided I like/trust/know who you are, I will talk to you about getting the information to login and spin your own stuff using my box. If you already know how to DJ over Icecast so much the better, but if you don't, I can probably teach you.
The first broadcast was a smashing success! I love you guys!
The second broadcast will be SOON!
AND!
The theme is..............ROCK OPERAS!
Questions, comments, or "fuck you?" Post them in this thread!
-----------
HOW TO CONNECT
MACINTOSH USERS:
For a Mac, I use VLC. Download it from here. Honestly, if you have a Mac you probably already have it.
1.) Go to File, then Open Network (this is also command-N)
2.) Click on the "Network" option in the window that comes up (if it does not do that already)
3.) In the field labelled "URL," enter http://24.255.59.21:8888/stream.ogg.m3u
4.) Press "Open"
5.) Listen and request shit
--------------------
Windows users:
If VLC is your preferred player, do the same thing as above.
WinAmp is a good one too. To use WinAmp:
1.) Download and install WinAmp. You should know how to do this.
2.) Go to "File" and "Open URL." This can be accomplished with "Control-L"
3.) Paste this URL In (THIS IS NOT THE SAME AS THE MAC USERS) http://24.255.59.21:8888/stream.ogg
4.) Press "Open"
5.) Listen and request shit

Re: DJ Fatbee's LoadingReadyRadio!
I knew I could count on you!
I keep thinking of things!!!!!!!!!
My musical tastes are fairly varied, but blues and rock are where my heart and soul is, so you'll probably hear a lot of that when I spin. I try to keep to artists that might not have been on the FM airwaves a lot, but now and then there are songs that are popular for a reason, and if I like them (or someone requests them), then they'll get played too. I'll do my best to mix it up, but hey, it's as much for me as it is for you.

Re: DJ Fatbee's LoadingReadyRadio!
This sounds pretty cool. I will definitely check your station out.
Re: DJ Fatbee's LoadingReadyRadio!
I used to be DJ Cake on eve radio, when I played eve online. It was fun. Though, my music collection is painfully smaller now that I don't have pirated tunes.

Re: DJ Fatbee's LoadingReadyRadio!
Listening to a live show might be a bit tricky without a regular schedule, but if you were to record the shows and post them online somewhere, I'd probably take a listen.

This is absolutely not going to happen, ever.
I'll bump this thread (or make a new one, or find some way of notifying people) when I'm online, and I'll be spinning for hours at a time. If you miss it, it's not any skin off my nose - but I will absolutely not be recording these for later consumption.

The Honking of Lavos?
*ponders*
The Honking... of Lavos.
*furrowed brow*
I dunno know if that's funnier as the name of a band, a movie, a book, a dance, or a sexual position.

Re: DJ Fatbee's LoadingReadyRadio!
I'd love to this weekend, but unfortunately I'm at the screening followed swiftly by my driving home. I will listen when I can though! And I might just be interested in trying to DJ but no one would probably like my music...

Re: DJ Fatbee's LoadingReadyRadio!
I literally forgot about the screening, it fell off my radar since I can't go.
I will update the OP, the first broadcast will NOT be trying to step on the screening! That would be like, not cool.

What about all of us who cannot attend the screening? Alex cannot save us this year, so who will?

Sunday, Sunday Sunday!
I'll be on today (8 November 2009), probably around 5:00pm or so. I'll update the OP after I have some coffee with how to connect (it's dead easy).

I'm pretty sure Mountain is an hour behind Pacific, so it'd be 6:00pm for you. The thread title will be changed when I'm on the air too, so just...er...watch this space, because I'm really bad at time zones before coffee.

Re: DJ Fatbee's LoadingReadyRadio!
Sable, you're still thinking in Alaska time. You're now an hour ahead of Pacific/BC in Mountain/Arizona (unless you're in the Navajo Nation, that gets...complicated).

LOADINGREADYRADIO IS ON THE AIR
But how do I connect?, said Little Billy?
Why, Little Billy (you're Little Billy, just get over it), you use the following URL:
http://24.255.59.21:8888/stream.ogg.m3u
DO NOT JUST CLICK ON THIS, YOU WILL BLOW YOUR COMPUTER UP (Eventually).
Paste this link into a network-aware audio player!

I will be AFK streaming for about a half an hour, I have some furniture to put together. HOWEVER I WILL BE CHECKING MY EMAIL WHEN IT DINGS, SO MAKE IT DING.
