I don't know if my school has decided to block it for some stupid reason or what the problem is, but whenever I try to connect, it automatically disconnects. Fortunately, I managed to find a work-around that does somehow work.

Go to http://mibbit.com/ and click "Start Chatting Now". At the top of the topmost of the three boxes, where it says "IRC: *dropdown box* Server|Auth|Charset", press "server" and put in chat1.ustream.tv for the server address. Nick is whatever you want, and channel is #desert-bus-drivercam. Press "go" and it will connect you and pull up the chat client.

The downside of this method is you can't log into ustream with it as far as I know, so you'll need a mod to manually voice you before you can talk.

EDIT (where's that strikethrough when you need it?): Disregard that last part, when you're selecting the server click "Auth" as well. Set the dropdown box to "Pass", put in your ustream password, and have your nick set to your ustream ID. Then you'll join automatically voiced.

My university blocked 6667 supposedly because a lot of botnets use irc for control. I use mibbit, but the last time I tried mibbit wouldn't connect to ustream, so can someone tell me if it is working now?

FUCK

It seems Ustream, in its continuing display of stupidness, has banned the mibbit client, so those who can't connect through the regular IRC port are shit out of luck. FUCK.

That is unbelievably terrible timing. It's probably just coincidence. A post from another site (via google search) seems to indicate mibbit allows people to get around bans somehow. It sounds like it's kind of a pain for moderators so the solution was just to ban all mibbit users. Suck.

At least it's only going to keep me from following the chat at work and I can still follow at home.

http://blog.mibbit.com/

It's moderated, but I've left a note asking about uStream banning mibbit. There might be something mibbit can do. It might be worth making a few posts there to see if we can get a response.

Does someone with a sever want to run a closed irc proxy for us?
Pretty please?

I shot off an e-mail to the support line as well, in the meantime, I'll keep trying to find a way around this issue, since our main problem seems to be a ban on port 6667 on all of our servers.

I found it!

This requires an irc client like mIRC (which is what I'm using right now). Do the steps as described in the original post, but when you're adding the ustream server, do these additional steps:

under mIRC options -> connect -> firewall, put Firewall support to 'DCC', and protocol to 'socks 5'. Hostname is 189.87.28.59:1080 and port is 1080. leave the other fields blank.

Now go to connect -> local info, and make sure "on connect, always get" has both boxes checked, and lookup method is 'server'.

Congratulations, you should now be able to connect. At least I am, somehow.

Now, WARNING: 189.87.28.59:1080 is an open proxy (I found it on this list), so security is up in the air on it. So use this method at your own risk. Hopefully in the future we can set up our own private proxy that will be secure, but for now, this will at least let us join in on Desert Bus (hopefully).

Nope, that didn't work for me.

Still, I'm glad that at least a few of us will be able to get through and chat. I'll keep trying.

Double-post for other IRC info:

For those of you who find the the Desert Bus chat going too fast, for us LRR-ites we can use our own chatroom to discuss things in a more relaxed fashion.

server is: irc://arg-irc.net channel: #loadingreadyrun

There's also this mibbit client for those of us behind proxies and the like: http://embed.mibbit.com/?server=irc.arg ... rompt=true
