The thread of win
Re: The thread of win
I walked fifteen miles over moorland on Saturday, considering I don't go out often I felt like I’d done loads.

Well, betting with your mate who will get together, and then being proved right, thus winning a drink, is win.
Also, getting booked on a course in Devon that gives me two days surfing in early September + food + accommodation + board and wetsuit hirer + boarding tuition all for £250 is very win. Only got to do a little footpath maintenance for the a few days as part of it. That is win also.

Re: The thread of win
What isn't win though is confusing the Big Relationship Thread with The Thread of Win. Jk, honest mistake dude.

It's because I made a post in here, and then it didn't register because my internet messed up. So in my brain I thought I had posted, so when I was in the B.R.T. and I thought of the bet, I sort of posted in there, thinking it was relevant, not in here, if that makes sense :s

Spending over an hour trying to get something simple working in Java (dragbox with translucency) only to realize a much simpler way, but still learning tons in the process? Win.

In the darkest times, realizing that, at the end of the day, that there is always a roof over your head, food on the table, and someone who always loves you is win.
Also, Boylan's Diet Cream Soda is win. Seriously, have you tried it? It's absolutely amazing.

Of course I'm out of my mind. It's dark and scary in there!

Finally having the balls to take the step to say yes to the one university I've wanted to go to ever since I moved back to Canada, despite the fact that it will mean at least 5 years of hard work, and untold amounts of debt, is win, right?

Re: The thread of win
Whether or not that is win depends on if you go through with it. If you fail to graduate, it is most definitely not win, but upon your success there will be great win indeed.

Well...I view the win as being "actually making a life altering decision, and making sure it was a damned good one."

Re: The thread of win
Well, the thing about huge decisions is that they're hit and miss. You win some and you lose some. If it turns out to be a mistake, hopefully you can at least extract some value from the experience.
That said, I still wish you the best and hope that it works out. Good luck!

Yes, it is very much win. Anything you do that is in the direction YOU want to go, is WIN. Even if you ultimately "fail."

Re: The thread of win
I sense that from the quotations around the word "fail" in your post that you don't entirely agree with my less optimistic position. Confidence-boosting is good, and I too wish him well, but my goal was to alleviate worry primarily.
theDreamer, whether or not you are successful really comes down to you. A degree is not beyond the reach of anybody who wants it, but that's just the problem: you can only get it if you want it. You've made the first step, so congratulations.
This is a bit different from the way this thread usually goes, but I've thought for a while that there wasn't enough actual discussion in this thread. The venting thread often has discussion, and I think this thread should be similar.

wartjr2373 - I can appreciate a balanced view and discussion, you of all people should know that.
But, sometimes, especially with big life changes, we (me included) need to be reminded that no matter what happens, we did the right thing.
Dreamer is obviously doing something he very much wants to do, but is unsure. Anything worth having is a risk and a lot of hard work. This is the thread of win, and here *I* will only encourage people to follow their dreams.
I have exactly one (1) friend who has, without fail, encouraged me throughout the divorce process. Without this friend, I would never have had the strength to completely start over.
Having a friend like that, is WIN.

I'm finding myself talking more often to my semi-estranged father. That's probably a good thing, though it's never simple.

Watching my brother's girlfriend chew him out for not wanting to see a romantic movie with her while texting back and forth quotes from "Army of Darkness" with my own girlfriend was pretty win in my book.

So true. I would never be able to be happy if my girlfriend wasn't such a huge nerd, too.
Re: The thread of win
So the carnival in town (Skidney) for the weekend. I'm by myself, and I can't ride the rides by myself, because it's not safe. I head over by the scrambler, looking for someone who's alone but wants to ride.
There's a mom with her two little kids, and she looks kinda hesitant. I ask her if she wants me to take her kids on the ride
she says ok, sure. Mom did NOT want to go on the ride. So the next thing I know is I feel something brush up against my leg and my stomach and there's this little one hugging me, and kissing my t-shirt! I just about squealed with the cuteness of it, but held it in.
"You have totally made my day sweetheart," I told her. Unfortunately, little girl had to bail about a min or so into the ride, poor sweetie . Luckily I asked the operator if I could stop the ride if either one of them didn't like it.
So yeah, her brother really enjoyed it but the little girl felt really scared afterwards. Poor thing. Nevertheless, I told her I was proud of her for trying.
The hug alone was totally made of win. What do you think?
