Re: The thread of win
Good friend o' mine got through fairly serious heart surgery clean!
To celebrate (and because his 30th birthday will be the Wednesday before), his wife's organising a LAN for the first weekend in December!

Your friend has most of my good mojo and best wishes!
...the rest I am saving for my darling, wonderful, saintly wife. This woman has proved her love and devotion to me more strongly than any human should EVER have to, and I am indebted to her for at least the next two lifetimes.

"Papierflieger-Maschinenpistole" (paper airplane machine pistol) - you load sheets of paper and it shoots out fully folded paper airplanes (and not the ubiquitous - and kinda dangerous - 'dart', either).

Re: The thread of win
CONGRATS!
In an ideal world, this wouldn't be such an important thing, but it can give you much more freedom and independence.
Heck, even if you never get a car, you can still offer to take shifts if going on a long road trip with friends, could operate a vehicle in an emergency (like move someone's car or lorry away from a burning building, or drive someone to the A&E, etc.)
And worst come to worst, you've still got another piece of ID.

I passed my 1:st Dan Kendo examination earlier today, woo! Quite the relief, now I won't have to think about examinations until about a year or so.

Thank you all! Wasn't expecting this kind of feedback. It's a part-time gig but it should couple nicely with my other 7 part-time gigs.

Re: The thread of win
Been learning piano tuning and repair, and to that end got a $100 Baldwin upright that was an absolute piece of garbage. After two months of work and meeting with the master I'm apprenticing under, the piece is now playing as well as it ever did.

Re: The thread of win
Screencheat launches tomorrow for full release.
So I'm 22, finished uni, started my company, released a mobile game and am now releasing a game on Steam, Humble and GOG tomorrow. Went to PAX Prime to show it off, we got picked for the indie showcase at PAX Aus....
...I went and got paid to talk at my uni (which I only graduated from 9 months ago) to talk about doing what I do. I can finally look down on all those lazy mother fuckers who are still working at the same jobs they were. Still fucking complaining about not getting the handout they expected from their uni instead of doing the work. Fuck them, I got a cake that looks like a childs drawing of the windows logo.
I'm just gonna sip my drink for a little and dwell on that and try to realise I'm not a complete failure and that nearly killing myself over the last 2 years has been working to something....

Hopefully I can pay rent!
Thanks everyone who's helped test or just talked to me while I was working in the pits. It's been great to have the LRR Forums and DB community around me to help keep me sane.

Re: The thread of win
So something not great rolled into something really quite remarkable at my magic draft last night.
There is one young woman who plays fairly regularly, shes good prizes more often than not. She had just won her second match.
one of the guys in his early 20's looks back over his shoulder and says "hey (Player1) how did you do?"
Player1: I got wrecked
Guy:HAHA! you got beat by a girl, you suck!
(all play in the store stops)
Myself and a couple other people sitting nearby (shake head and give disapproving looks)
Judge: (quietly comes up): You need to apologize for that.
Guy: (loudly)WHAT? Im just making fun of my friend I dont see what the problem is.
Player 2 :No, not OK
Player 3: Dude, you need to think.
Me: Apologize.
(all play is still stopped everyone is staring)
Judge: im officially telling you this is bad behavior, you need to apologize.
Guy: COME ON WHAT THE HELL? Fine who do I have to apologize to my buddy cause he got beat or the chick?
Player 4: dude, are you familiar with the concept of sexism
Player 3:Come on, you need to apologize to the young lady.
Guy: Fine, im sorry I said you got beat by a girl, you got beat by a good player, and I know you are good at magic you win all the time.
Young Woman: uh, its fine forget it.
(play resumes)
The young woman loses round 3 and has to leave because she and her boyfriend ride share and he had to work at 11:00 so they left.
Between round 3 and 4 after they left.
Guy: I can't believe you guys, you were being Jerks to me.
Store Owner: Are you serious right now?
I sit down next to him.
Me: OK let me explain this to you. You said "you got beat by a girl" in a way to mock your buddy, what this says is "girls in general are lower players who are expected to lose so if a guy loses to a girl he is less of a person and deserving of mocking because girls are inherently bad"
Player 3: We need more women to play this game, and an attitude like that discourages play from women.
Guy: But there are lots of good chick players, she is really good.
Player3: But what you said was "You got beat by a girl" that one statement discounted not just her as a good player, but any woman as a good player saying they didn't win because they were good, they won because their male opponents messed up, because the only way a woman can win is if the guy F*s up.
Player 2: I dont think you realize how ingrained the sexism is in that statement.
Guy: sure it wasnt cool but I was just being like Cartmen
Store Owner: That is not something you should aspire to.
Guy: yeah I guess, whatever.
