Re: The thread of win
Went to a board-gaming club last night, at the behest of plummeting_sloth. Had a great time and met some new friends. Played "Ticket to Ride" and "Firefly" for the first time. Had fun.

Moved into my new apartment today!
Well, mostly. Mattress doesn't arrive until Monday. Plus there's lots of other things that need to be done. And this roommate may have being a terrible idea...
But I'm here now, so woo!

Re: The thread of win
In November my desktop computer crashed (I think the motherboard gave up the ghost), and I've been using my 2009 Macbook White ever since (which I installed Yosemite on, big misstake). But a few days ago my mate told me that they had a spare computer at their work, which wasn't working, but if I could fix it I could have it. One new HDD later and I have a new desktop computer. Yay!
It's going to be a little problematic for gaming though, It's a mini tower with a 280w PSU, so it won't power my old graphics card, and It's got some sort of proprietary contact for the motherboard, I need to figure out some sort of adapter or something. Or get a new, smaller GPU.

Re: The thread of win
If your GPU requires additional 6 pin power connectors (which I guess is the case) you can try a little trick as long as the PSU in your other PC still works.
Basically you can use your old PSU to power your graphics card until you figure things out. However if jamming metal objects into exposed power plugs makes you uncomfortable this is probably not for you.
Anyway, here's a video that explains how to do it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LxCgmuJVohM

I VERY strongly discourage doing this. It'll work IF and ONLY if both powersupplies are well designed and connect negative to ground. If one of them is not of a good design it can result in a large potential difference between the voltage levels (Note voltage is always relative. 25000v potential to ground at the negative and 25005v potential to ground at the positive rail still give 5v power relative to each other. This is why 3-phase power works.) The result of that would be breaking the smoke seal on one of the components and releasing the magic blue smoke that makes all electronics work.
If you are sort of handy with a soldering iron you can find the pinout of the motherboard and the "normal" powersupply (http://pinouts.ru/power/) and then make a converter cable. Or eBay that shit. (for example: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Convert-Dell-Motherboard-Power-Supply-connector-to-Standard-20pins-ATX-/230867480318 No idea if it's actually a dell you have, but its probably the sort of thing you need)
Then just use your old or buy one with enough power to run everything.

Ooh dear, no that's probably not a great idea, not worth the trouble, the computer's got integrated graphics as well so I'm not desperate for the additional GPU.

Yeah this is probably the way I'll go, I think I've found an adapter cord (it's a lenovo, it's got a 14-pin connector). First priority is to get the computer up and running with all my old files, programs and so on.

Well, theoretically, with 2 well designed PSUs it COULD work...

It works just fine, me and a colleague did something similar at work a few years ago, we used a secondary PSU to power a HDD which we connected to a thin client (which had no provisions for extra SATA power at all), and we had to short out some pins on the secondary PSU to get it to run. But we were just horsing around, that kind of setup is nothing I'd want running even semi-permanently at home, especially not if it's just for gaming.

Jup, thats why I put the "2 well designed PSU's" bit in there. It'll work. It'll probably work with most PSU's out there. But then you'll find one of those good old crappy designs where the negative has been left floating relative to ground and you'll possibly have 220 volts trying to run through your video card.

Re: The thread of win
Okay, after shooting myself in the foot with an anti-malware scan & cleanup BEFORE CHRISTMAS, I've finally gotten the chance to get my online banking service unlocked.
I'd been getting poor performance, and wondered if I'd gotten 'stuff' on my computer, so I did the virus scans, and the got ol' Spybot S&D on and 'immunized' my computer...with the option to 'delete tracking cookies' turned on.
Welp, that also affected my using online banking, because without the cookie, my bank sensibly responded with "since you're using a computer that's not familiar to us, please also answer you security questions after logging in."
...okay, sec. questions I haven't looked at since I set them...far too long ago.
...and I have a sneaky tendency to take normal word answers and deliberately mis-spell them so even if someone's peeking over my shoulder (or happens to know who was my best man, or what color my first car was), unless they're REALLY watching closely, they'll, for example, see me type what appears to be 'green' when it's actually 'geern'...so knowing this info doesn't necessarily help.
...so yeah, I got the three strikes.
And the holidays were too busy for me to get to the bank (and I've never used phone banking, so I don't have a setup with that )
And then today was the FIRST weekday I've had off in 2015 to go talk to my bank, verify identity in-person, and then speak with the IT people over the phone.
But now my online banking is back in action, so I can be lazy and not have to bug my local banking people again

Re: The thread of win
I got a hug from Lawrence Fishburne at work today (for those like myself who have no idea who that is, he played Morpheus in The Matrix)! He was the last table we served tonight and we were leaving as he was. Turns out he's in this city right now filming season 3 of Hannibal.
Honestly we were nice and he was left alone to eat his meal (of course servers checking to make sure things were good). The other chef I was working with asked for a handshake and he got a hug instead. So I asked for a hug from both of them.

My university results have been updated. What was a 46 (fail) in one subject is now a 56 (pass). I'm still on track for graduation this year.
