Scotland has legalised gay marriage. Which confused me! I always thought we had a "We don't give a shit, do what you want, you're not hurting anybody" stance.
I've been told we HAVE been like that but now it's official and legally passed.

I thought it was like that already in Scotland :S
I guess the benefit of being under Tyranical rule of England (as Wales) is that what England does, we get it to.

Well nobody cares if you're gay or not in Scotland. It changes nothing. You're either a dick or a good guy and what you do in the bedroom's your business.
Just now it's actually officially on paper.

England soon have to pay for carrier bags. Yay <3
Does mean whenever my dad goes down to London for work, he cannot smuggle them across the border anymore. Oh well. Enjoy being responsible for what you use to carry shopping England!

Heck, one of our biggest grocery chains (Loblaws) has been charging for disposable bags for a couple of years now.
Mind you, BOTH the big chains around this end of the country have been encouraging the purchase and use of reusable 'bags for life/the environment/green bags' for even longer than that, and I'm sure Sainsbury's et al. have been, too.

Ireland made it a law about 10-15 years ago, 15c per plastic bag. Apparantly its led to a reduction in litter... though people just dump the other stuff anyway instead of putting it in a bag first

Does mean, with the 5p bag thing, the supermarkets push their super-duper life4bag bags which cost much.

Re: The thread of win
I was reading a study that with the super thin polypropylene bags because they take so little resources to make, if you reuse them at all they are better for the environment than most of the reusable bags.
The explanation was long and complicated but it boiled down to most of those reusable bags are also made from highly processed petroleum products, but they use A LOT more of them, and are even less likely to get broken down. You have to use the reusable heavy bags 18-20 times for each use of the thin bags to make them "more environmentally friendly" so what the researcher was saying is, if you want to save the environment, save the thing bags if they arent torn and reuse them.

Re: The thread of win
Yeah, but the 'heavy' reusable bags ARE MEANT to be used MANY more times than '18-20' - we've a handful of bags we use, and ALL OF THEM ARE OVER TWO YEARS OLD (at biweekly shopping runs, that's over 50 uses each).
Our fave is a BIG canvas bag we got before all this 'save the environment' folderol for the same price as one of these little 'recycled' bags - it's about ten years old, has a small tear near the top (proper hem stopped it tho), and it gets used every two weeks.
So, yeah, if you REALLY want to save the environment, think longer term.

Re: The thread of win
My mum has two of those canvas bags for life. They're HUGE enough to carry a week's shopping easily and she's had them for 10 years.
Really, get them.

Re: The thread of win
Her point would be that if you use those plastic bags three times, you would be doing more for the environment than using those heavy bags for two years, use them 6 times and you have out helped 4 years with a big bag.
Canvas bags are better than the typical, but they tend to also be treated and heavily processed. People seem to have a misconception about the thin plastic bags. Over 50 of them are made from the same amount of material as a normal 1 gallon milk jug.

Re: The thread of win
The point of the bag charge was to reduce the amount of plastic bags being made, being used to carrying shopping once and being binned afterwards.
It's meant to encourage people to reuse any existing bag.
It's just shops have realised they can exploit this law to make more money by selling their own bags.
I personally carry a bag around with me anyway. And I buy a 5p plastic bag if I need one. I only dispose of the bag if my Morrisons Salad has leaked into it.
The 5p thing is enough to make most people reconsider, but not too much that you scorn the ground when you have to buy one. If you buy something for £10, an extra 5p on a one-off isn't going to make you cry blood.

Re: The thread of win
I've lost count of how many reusable bags we have. There's a plastic bag in the laundry filled with other plastic ones as well. Almost always take them to the larger supermarkets, and usually to the local as well (usually the canvas ones).

Re: The thread of win
I scored an 80% for the week in my skills class. I count this as a win because it is the highest possible mark one can achieve in that class because my chef is a dick.
Perhaps I should've put this in mixed emotion . . .

I think achieving the best possible grade in a class with an actively under-scoring and impossible to completely please chef grading you is actually completely at home in the Win thread.
