2009 Best Music!

Postby Kathleen » 02 Dec 2009, 10:00

Also on the list, but they wouldn't fit:
Royksopp - Junior
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - S/T
-----

So anyhow, discuss your favourite albums of aught nine.

This is my long list, but it could flux as I attempt to gather everything I missed into my head.

Out of your list, Crack the Skye, as it's the only one I've heard. I really should pick up It's Blitz at some point.

My top picks:
Them Crooked Vultures - S/T
That Handsome Devil - Enlightenment's For Suckers
Porcupine Tree - The Incident
The Mars Volta - Octahedron
The Decemberists - The Hazards of Love
Dream Theater - Black Clouds & Silver Linings

Did the Hazards of Love totally disappoint anyone else? That and The Resistance were my two biggest letdowns of the year. Also, the Franz Ferdinand album that came out this year was so-so as well.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs are the only ones I've heard this year; Atlas Sound and Mastodon are the only other bands I've heard of.

I don't know why I'm commenting, I don't care about music. Apologies.

Franz Ferdinand have always been so-so for me.

I totally <3 The Hazards of Love. After The Crane Wife my favorite album of theirs.

THAT is the reason why i really don't listen to "newer" music, there is not much that is really good any more...

but i liked The DethAlbum II - Dethklok but im also a Brendon Small fanboy....

i've been listening to a lot of acoustic guitar/string and experimental jazz this year, so i don't know pretty much anything on the list. This usually happens to me though, as I absorb musical knowledge in a very uncoordinated way. That said though, my favorite album this year that i'm sure came out this year is 11:11 by Rodrigo and Gabriela. Jake Simabukuro's Live Ukulele album is also great (ukulele covers of ave maria, thriller, while my guitar gently weeps and bach are all win).

I'll try to listen to your list now, though, so I can accurately vote!

Also, if we can add live albums:

Coheed and Cambria - Neverender.

Possibly the most epic live album I've heard.

Well Kathleen, out of everything off of your list the only band I'm actually familiar with is the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Coincidentally not only are they one of my sister's favorite bands, but her boyfriend's brother's band, YACHT, is on tour with them right now (or at least they were last time I checked, which was September).

As far as my favorites from this year...

*checks iTunes library*

I don't like this game. Most of the music I've bought this year isn't actually from this year. According to iTunes the only albums I own from 2009 are:

- Ocean Eyes - Owl City
- The Resistance - Muse (which was ok)
- Dethalbum II - Dethklok
- Brand New Eyes - Paramore

I'm sure there's all sorts of other stuff that I've listened to that I can't even remember, so take that list with a grain of salt... or maybe the entire salt shaker... whatever works...

I've never heard of any of those bands, but I have no interest in music, so that stands to reason. Music just osmosis itself on to my computer over a period of several years.

I may check some of them out though.

I would hafta have on my list:

1. Wolfmother - The Cosmic Egg
2. MUTEMATH - Armistice
3. Green Day - 20th Century Breakdown
4. No More Kings - And The Flying Boombox

And that's all I remember for this year... And yes, they're a bit more mainstream.

Don't be silly.

64K didn't release anything this year.

Hazards of Love wasn't as good as some of there other stuff, and it can be a pretty hefty listen, but I still enjoy it, seems to follow more along the story telling arc over the whole album.

Just because LRR hasn't mentioned it in a video doesn't mean 64K hasn't been releasing a steady stream of albums over the past 6 years.
