I present to you: one of the reasons the Dutch Language is awesome.

O, cooking? I don't cook, but I will make me some nice Irish Coffee after I'm done shoveling away the snow around our house.

At present most of the stuff I make is baking rather than 'cooking', and I don't have many photos thereof.

Here's a couple of things I baked back when it was still summer:

Refridgerator Cake

Strawberry and Cinnamon Torte

okay, now, this was easier when there was only one cook/bake thread, but my dad and I made the cake (O Bolo De Bolacha Maria) that I gave the recipe for in the other thread (before this one was up). However, this cake involves no heat except that from coffee. I will post the process pics here and the finished cake (pre overnight refrigeration, or as I like to think of it, the antibaking). More cookies and other stuff to come:

finished cake, with cinnamon and shaved dark chocolate on top. Ready to stick into the fridge. Bang. something like 30,000 Kcal of manly sweetness.

damnit, what about fried dough, and savory cheese and meat pastries? where does this awesome food all go!?!?!

Wow those look delicious guys!

Also, baking and cooking are two different things, and Tak and I were hijacking topics with our baking - thus a baking thread was born. Put whatever food related stuff in here if you would like. I don't mind either way :)

Since the pic of the cake is a little blurry, it almost looks like tiny ants crawling over it. Would that make it more MANLY? How do you cut something like that? do the cookies get soft?

like a cheese cake you cool it for 12-24 hours so it hardens and you serve it chilled. This makes it's consistency fairly similar to that of a tiramisu (which is a fundamentally similar cake, though this one has no liquor). I'd also say it keeps together a wee bit better.

Also, I always considered it a kind of square-rectangle relationship, where baking is a kind of cooking (much like frying, or boiling, saute) but not all cooking is baking, ala the Oxford American Dictionary Widget:

cook |koŏk|
verb
1 [ trans. ] prepare (food, a dish, or a meal) by combining and heating the ingredients in various ways : shall I cook dinner tonight? | [ intrans. ] I told you I could cook | [as adj. ] ( cooked) a cooked breakfast.

bake |bāk|
verb [ trans. ]
1 cook (food) by dry heat without direct exposure to a flame, typically in an oven or on a hot surface : they bake their own bread and cakes | [with two objs. ] I baked him a cake for his birthday | [as adj. ] ( baked) baked apples.

so my issue is that this food is barely ever exposed to heat. however, it IS a cake.

I'm really not that anal. You can put photos of kitties and cupcakes in this thread if you want. In fact, I encourage it.

So, for Christmas breakfast, my mom made some tasty Flipped bitches and some sausage and bacon. OMNOMNOM was the only adjective worthy of describing it.

MMMM! I'm eating leftover jalepeno poppers and spanikopitas from Christmas eve. My poor body has suffered in great gluttony this past holiday. Now I will rape the gym.

Last night I made angel food cake, mascarpone whipped cream, and raspberries for a dessert. It's a tradition in my family, and considering this is my first ever Christmas away from home ( :( ) it was really nice.

This morning we had flipped bitches, bacon, turkey bacon, ham steaks, and cheesy eggs, and tonight I'm making my candied yams to go with turkey dinner.

I'm not sure if chocolate-crafting counts as "baking," per se, but somewhere on the LRRums, someone linked to a recipe for Hot Chocolate on a Stick. Did a test batch earlier this week...SO GOOD.

Image

Planning to make another batch next week, after I get a proper sifter...had to make these with hot cocoa mix since I couldn't sift out my own sugar and cocoa. :(

My wife made foccacia bread today. And by that I mean, it took all freakin' day! Three different rising steps! What the heck, Martha!? Delicious, though.

metcarfre, I made Italian bread one time, and it took over 36 hours to make. Plus, it was cold so the dough has to sit and rise in a warm spot, and it was the middle of winter in my mountain-based home.

Well... that's dumb. I don't got all day to make bread, savvy?

I mean, my pizza dough recipe, sure, there's an hour-and-a-half of rising, but I can just toodle off and game for a bit before I come back, prepare all the ingredients, and pull the dough out. But this thing was crazy-go-nuts.

...With Pie!

I'm going to complete the video of my Portuguese cake seen above. I'll post it here when done.

Aww Muffin...

(FYI, muffins are a completely different process.)

I'm not super into pumpkin pie, but I tried to make it one time when I had a pumpkin. It turned out AWFUL. I don't know what I did to piss off the gods of squash-based foodstuffs, but I did.

One of my friends is having tea and cake this weekend and I am going to try to make my mother's lemon loaf.

Pumpkin pie using fresh pumpkin is actually rather difficult, because the pumpkin needs so much processing, extra sugar etc.
Which is why I cheat and use canned. :)
