Doctor Who End of Time Part 2

Postby Elomin Sha » 01 Jan 2010, 11:40

I'll admit it. I did shed a tear or two.

Only problem was the ending was drawn out too long.
From the little of what we see of Smith I think DW will be in good hands.

Absolutely brilliant, a very good episode, great plot, and fine acting from Cribbins, Simm and Tennant.

A very poignant ending, if a little long. I think they wanted to go back and revisit a lot of his best moments in that last part. I really liked Tennant's last line as well.

I'll admit Smith looked interesting for those first few seconds, should be good.

I'm sorry but that line about Martha and Mickey being married seems a little too much of a lead in to get them into Torchwood (saves the trouble of finding the actor for the bloke who Martha was supposed to have married).

Sadly the wrecking of the Tardis set for the regeneration scene is simply a ploy so they can redo the interior, which is a shame really, they could have just had him change it on his own. Looks like we shouldn't have too long to wait for the next series though.

Well, he was full of *Spoiler* so it would cause more damage during the Regeneration.

I thought it was good overall, but the ending was freaking gratutious. I like it a lot when Dr. Who's serious, and the drama in it often works very well, but the thing about pathos is that it has to be used sparingly, and to great effect. The last 20 minutes were just a glut of sad little looks and 'meaningful' stares that could have been cut without the program losing anything.

And...I'm a little afraid of how Matt Smith's going to be.

My main problem with the last few series is all the 'wackiness' that Tennant showed. Figuring problems out while pulling silly faces and fighting evil while gurning. Given that Smith spent his minute onscreen spouting one-liners, hopping about like bugs bunny, and generally gibbering like an idiot, it seems like this trend will continue.

Shame, that.

They've just shown a teaser trailer for the next series. It looks good and this Doctor isn't afraid to use a gun.

"I don't want to go."
I liked it. We only got a brief look at the new Doctor, so it's hard to say what he'll be like when things calm down.

this is R.T Davis' writing you know, his endings are always loooooooong.

overall it was pretty epic though. i had my reservations about it and i did have to suspend my disbelief almost to breaking point, but it kinda started to make a little bit more sense as it unfolded.

on a side note, what happened to the master i wonder?

I really hope that Russell Tovey will rock up on Torchwood. I love him dearly, and he was very sweet for those thirty seconds.

I didn't really dig the Time Lords plot... the narration irritated me in the first part, and being a Newb Fan I can't say that I care too much overall. But I liked the conflict about who to shoot. And the revelation of the prophecy was awesome.

The ending... long. And I cried through it all. And then I was sad the Doctor didn't go back and save Ianto, and I cried more. And then there was Rose. And more tears. Yeaaah...

Bring on the new year, I guess. Though the Beeb is terribly loose on defining seasons, so "Spring" could seriously mean any time in the next year

Someone explain to me how they got the diamond to earth?

Theremin, while I like the silliness, Smith did seem to be trying to be Tennant in his bit. Although that trailer looked pretty epic.

Liberal application of the Timey Wimey Wibbly Wobbly stuff, I believe.

It is best not to question the science of Doctor Who...

Yeah, but they didn't even give a technobabble style explanation. And then later specifically said 'Nothing can escape the time lock'.

Unless it's a diamond thrown at a hologram, apparently.

i dunno, they're timelords, suspend your disbelief man :P

re. silliness, i was really hoping that they'd change the doctor completely and make him much more serious and intense, rather than just have Smith as Tennant but younger. Dont get me wrong there's nothing wrong with that, i would just like them to change things around a little bit.

tennant was good because he was normally really eccentric and rather silly, which was hilarious and awesome and brilliant acting. when it got to a climax he would go deadly serious and the juxtaposition with him being silly and being serious was awesome. turning it up like that really worked.

I would like them to have swapped it round for Smith. So he's normally really serious and intense, but when it gets to a climax he goes completely off the wall and silly, making him seem not quite sane. i think that juxtaposition could work really well , switching it up from deadly seriously to completely off the wall and nuts, making it really intense that way.

looking at the trailer it looks like they're going for the former not that latter, which i'm sure will work. however I'm afraid that the new series will just be a tired rerun of last few series with a younger actor who is not as good as tennant at what he does. Hopefully it'll be ok, but we'll have to see when the new series comes around

Nothing could escape the timelock unless... it already existed there and outside it. Which the Master's Drumming Brain did, apparently. So they followed it. Using the diamond as some kind of homing device.

Alternatey, Dumbledore did it. With help from Captain Kirk and a nuclear-powered DeLorean.

As to Smith's character - I would imagine that RTD didn't try too hard with the characterisation of the new Doctor, so I'm expecting it to get new once we're into the series proper.

From what I've heard, they've realised that they're basically writing him as Tennant, so hopefully they'll try to mix it up a bit in future.

At least the writing team is man enough to realise that. Plus if they've gotten stuck in that rut then it's probably a good thing that Tennant has left.

I think Smith would benefit from having a special like Tennant did, a one-off to allow him to settle in before flinging him at the series and seeing what sticks. However, I'm all for more Who after what has been a pretty poor year (what with only 5 episodes of Torchwood as well) and so I'm looking forward to the new series.

I'm remembering that I was sceptical of both Ecclestone and Tennant and they both did amazing jobs so I'm withholding judgement of Smith until he gets a couple of episodes under his belt and settles into his stride.

Tennant. It was the aforementioned Juxtaposition of wackiness and seriousness as well as his boundless enthusiasm for exploration.

Ecclestone. I liked that he was Northern, I loved a lot of those episodes, and I liked his moments of humour amoungst the Time Lord Misery. I may also have imprinted on him baby-duck style.

I'd have to agree with Katie in preferring Ecclestone. I felt that his portrayal of the Doctor had a lot more depth to it: Tennant became far too two dimensional as a character, and to be honest, I'm very glad to see him go and I hope that Doctor Who can develop further as a show, as I was very disappointed by the episodes this year.
