When wolves escape
So, a zoo here in Sweden had a problem with their wolves escaping out of a hole in their designated area. So rather then fixing the hole with like a sheet of plywood or a stick, the zoo decided that it was a lot smarter to have the wolves shot. The whole pack.
This despite the wolves being harmless.
Seriusly, what the f***!?
This being the week after the national wolfhunt ended (they are only allowed to shot very few wolves in the whole country). Did the hunters not feel like they shot enough and had to pay the zoo or something? or were the zoo employees just to damn lazy to fix a small hole so they decided to have the whole wolfpack killed?!

Re: When wolves escape
I'm pretty sure there are wolves in Finland.
It's sad however that a lot of people are afraid of wolves. Especially one of the worst people on the planet "concerned parents" (should be a law against them); who just love to start being hysterical about there being wolves around and that the kids should stay indoors.
Wolves don't attack people (unless they got rabies or something but with rabies any animal can attack you).
I can understand if the Sami don't like the wolves because they attack and eat their raindeers, but that regular people will go ape-s**t crazy when a wolf is around is beyond me.

Re: When wolves escape
If I could, I would get a wolf instead of a dog, but I'd unfortunately have to settle for a husky, but I have a high-school related thing against huskies.
Eh, whatever. Wolves FTW.

Re: When wolves escape
Wolves are still wild animals, and they have much stronger instincts than dogs for violent and disruptive behavior. You catch your pet wolf doing something bad and scold it, it might just accept your challenge and think it can prove itself more dominant.
Unless you want to domesticate wolves, which would give you... surprise, surprise, dogs... they still should be treatedas wild creatures that are far less predictable and placid than normal pets.
S'not to say they aren't awesome creatures, but keeping one is much harder than people tend to realize.

Re: When wolves escape
Yeah I know, that's why I'm not going to try to get one. It's mostly just wishful thinking.
Re: When wolves escape
Not saying this was the right course of action, cause clearly it's not but has anyone ever dealt with a dog digging a hole under the fence and escaping? Once they figure out they can do it it's a huge job trying to stop it. Plywood or blocking the hole won't work, they dig around it. Filling the hole doesn't work, they just dig a new hole. It is a big problem. So I think it came down in the zookeepers minds that they either had to build a new enclosure or kill the wolves. Clearly they made the "cost effective" decision, when they could just have easily donated the wolves to another zoo with the proper facilities, or just released them back into the wild.

Waited in line for two hours to meet him at PAX, he was wearing the shirt. I laughed hard.

Re: When wolves escape
Who was in Star Trek, The Guild and several GTA games? This guyyy
(no, not Matt...)
Anyway, it's real sad that the wolves had to be shot, but it does indeed seem they were too smart for their own good, how cruel that may sound...

Re: When wolves escape
even if the wolves just dig a new hole it really seems so damn lazy and extreme to shot them all. Just move the pack to another cage. Then make sure the fence extends 2 meters down underground. Problem solved and no endangured animals had to be killed because you were lazy.

Not at this rate they won't.
Also Wil Wheaton is the general secretary in charge of nerd-dom. He was kinda disliked but got big via blogging back when blogging wasn't something that everybody and their mothers did.
Nothing to see here.
