I Could Make That

Postby Tally » 29 Jan 2010, 19:12

Hey everyone, look at me, look what I can do!

It does feel a bit like that's what I'm doing with this post, but I truly hope that people will find this interesting. And by "this" I mean "the following announcement" and by "the following announcement" I mean my new blog.

I've been noticing that there are a LOT of highly talented people around these forums when it comes to crafting (and to a lot of other stuff). Y'all probably caught on to this long ahead of me, but I do get distracted by other things a lo- ooh squirrel!

Anyway, I've started a blog about me crafting. Seeing as it's a pretty compulsive habit at this point in my life, and in order to keep the blog from curling up into a stale spider-like ball of no-new-posts death after a few weeks, I'm adopting the LRR method of updating weekly. Every Friday I will have a new post, just in time to inspire the weekends of like minded crafters everywhere.

Since another habit of mine is being poor, a lot of the posts will be about crafting with stuff from around the house (of course, I've got a fair bit of crafting material around my house.)

What I hope is that other craftsy people will be interested enough in this to check out the blog and make suggestions for new crafts or improvements on the posted ones, or share some of their own stuff. I'm also looking into featuring the work of other, totally cool and interesting and far more talented crafters. I may need to actually talk to a few of them about that first, though, so no names just yet. ;)

So there you are. My hopefully not entirely self-indulgent (I won't tell you what I ate for breakfast every day - that's what my Twitter account is for) blog: http://www.nheilke.com/blog

Cheers,
Tally

Oh! Tally! That stamp box is tres beautiful! It reminds me of the photo boxes that sell for much money in the stores. I have bought many of the photo boxes, since I have a ridiculous amount that need to be stored.

You should laquer this in a glossy finish! It would really make it come together nicely. Can't wait to see what else you have going on.

You might say that box would. . . really tie the room together?

I am about as un-crafty as one can be, yet I found it intriguing at least. Well done, Tally; even an outsider such as I can see that you're quite good at this.

Tally,

The "I could make that" idea is what lead me to become a machinist (which ultimately was a stupid career choice), and a blacksmith (if we're going to be obsolete let's be really obsolete)

so...be careful.

Sweet! Yes, I'd love to see a picture please! (Cherisse - lady_cherry831 on twitter) is the one who first introduced me to that whole idea.)

I love the stamp box, it looks really good!

I subscribed instantly and recommended your blog to my wife, who is also incredibly crafty. She was featured on WoW.com last year for a shirt she made: http://www.wow.com/2009/06/08/world-of-warcrafts-sugarrats-wow-bleach-shirt/

I want to join in with you Tally. So much crafty stuff to do, so little time. Then again, I don't know your experience with a sewing machine, but I like sewing too.

@davefp: Wow (haha), that's a really cute shirt. I'd love to see more of your wife's work.

@taki197: There will be future blog posts about sewing. Up until a couple years ago, all my sewing experiences invariably ended with me in tears and threatening to throw furniture. Then my folks gave me a new, fully functional, really cool sewing machine that was not spawned in the darkest realms of Hell, and things have been going much better. So yes, there will be some sewing stuff. I'm slowly getting better at it.

@Arius: You'd just need a really massive and powerful needle. Like a jackhammer, maybe.

Erm, not yet, blacksmithing is a newer hobby, it's been mostly study of theory and metalurgy at this point, and building my forge.

I also took up chainmailling and brewing >.>

For chainmaille, done some nice necklaces and bracelets for people.

Evidently, I'm making a chainmail suit out of paperclips. Any tips?
