New Doctor Who (Possible Spoilers)

Postby Elomin Sha » 03 Apr 2010, 10:27

The series is safe.
There's some easing between the Smith and Tennant as you watch. Some of Tennant's character comes through and you feel like you're still watching him.

Episode wise not bad but there were a couple of plot-points you could see coming.

What I'm confused by is the Dalek having a Union Jack on its dome. A Turn-coat?

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Sorry, but I've been waiting for this for ages and I'm happy regular Doctor Who is back with a bang. :D

Parts of it were predictable but it's still the first story yet. The new series has time to grow. I liked Stephen Moffats writing too. It was still fun and full of childhood charm but had a slightly darker tint to it and some slightly more grown up jokes too.

I'm sure Matt Smith and Karen Gillan are going to be great together, they already seem to make a perfect match.

Yep it was awesome!

Yeah been bugging me since I saw the trailers a Dalek with a Union Jack? Perhaps its like Aliens where humans think they can tame a deadly alien.

that was pretty awesome. Hopefully Smith with develop into a different Doctor from Tennant. This episode they were a little similar, but there were enough differences that you can see a different doctor emerging, he's just not fully formed yet. I'm sure as the series develops he will develop a character of his own.

Spoiler: The Doctor wins at the end.

Seriously, I was really glad that turned out the way it did. The overhaul of the TARDIS, Doctor's outfit, theme music, and logo give it a nice retro feel. And Smith is actually not bad at all. Overall, very promising for the first episode of the series, especially considering all the adjustments everyone involved had to make.

I have already rubbed this in the face of my friend, who is a total pessimist and thought that everything Smith touched was going to become awful. Ha!

Spoilers of course:

I loved it! It was really fun and I have to say that so far I enjoy Smith! So many good parts to the episode. It was a little predictable at the end, when she asked if she would be able to get back the next day and I was like, she's definately getting married... and she was...

I have a question, what exactly is a kissogram? Does she really just go to parties and kiss random dudes?

Maybe the union jack dalek has something to do with the big floating space city with a union jack on it, and the space spitfires...

I enjoyed Matt Smith. And Mr Moffats slightly creepy way of doing things. Muuuuch better.

Obviously. I'm trying to work out how. In my mind Daleks have been created to be used instead of soldiers by both the Brits and the Germans.

In space!

if so someone needs to go tell mr moffat that it's a terrible idea and then gently move him in the direction of a mental asylum.

Next episode is The Beast Below which will feature Britain in Space. According to Radio Times the 3rd episode is called Victory of the Daleks and includes Winston Churchill, so two similar eps, but one in the future in Space Britain and one in WW2 by the looks of it.

So, something completely random I noticed when i rewatched the episode, at the end when he's putting on all the ties and stuff, did anyone notice he didn't have a bow tie? Did he pull it out of one of the endless pockets 10th always seemed to have?

Magical, unexplained artificial gravity. Just like every fucking sci-fi story set in space ever*. I mean, I know it might not be the first thing to spring to a writer's mind, but there's no excuse for saying nothing about how characters apparently wish themselves into sticking to the floor in spacecraft.

Overall it was pretty good. Smith seems like a good fit, and Amelia looks to be a much less annoying companion than Donna. Also, I like the new design of the Tardis.

Have to say though, it kinda irked me how they showed the Hath(fish-people) in the flashbacks when they didn't have anything to do with Earth.

I was pretty happy and so was my fiancee. The episode wasn't great, but with a full cast of main and recurring characters to introduce there wasn't a whole lot of time to spend on the plot.

My fiancee was really disappointed to see the 10th Doctor go, but Matt Smith's portayal of the 11th Doctor dovetails (if not mimics) nicely with Tennant's Doctor. My guess is that he'll develop his own identity over the next tree episodes. Gillan, besides being easy on the eyes, actually can act! This is a good quality to have in a companion.

With her wedding day only a day away when she left, can we hope her relationship will only be a little hero worship and not unrequited love? I'm anxious to see the rest of the season. Fortunately, this upcoming Saturday evening is open! Like LRR, Doctor Who is one of those programs my fiancee and I can agree upon.
