Re: Books you're reading now
Am currently rereading Raymond E. Feist's Magician for the millionth time, but am otherwise between books. Its about time for a library run I think. I'm hoping to pick up Clockwork Angel if I can find it. I remember being told about it and thinking it sounded interesting, though now all I can remember is the name. Still, it's a pretty freaking awesome name.

Snowcrash was returned to the library half-finished.
I'm now reading On The Road by Jack Kerouac, and quite enjoying it.

I'm getting started on The Picture of Dorian Gray. So far I have no opinions except that I'm looking forward to getting into it.

Rereading The Hobbit in preparation for the movie. Unsurprisingly, it's just as good as I remembered.

Re: Books you're reading now
I've started on Sherlock Holmes again. I have a nice complete Sherlock Holmes book (4 novels plus all short stories) that I picked up about seven years ago for £1.49. It's interesting seeing how it fits into the TV series - Study in Scarlet (book) and Study in Pink (TV) are very similar in a lot of ways.

Re: Books you're reading now
I've got 4 books on the go at the moment:
China Meiville's Embassytown, a rather strange sci-fi novel about language that has rather appropriately got it's own large lexicon of made up words to get my head around.
Eldritch Tales - A HP Lovecraft short story collection.
And on audiobook:
Neal Stephenson's Diamond Age - which I tried before and have now restarted.
Jeff VanDemeer's Finch - Noir fantasy about a city under control of a race of fungus people. Featuring music by Murder by Death!

Geoff_B wrote:Is that before or after KOTOR?
It's takes place after KOTOR and was intended to help resolve the open endings of both KOTOR 1&2. I started it, but I really couldn't get into it. It's split between Reven sections and a story about a sith, and they each had elements that I really took issue with.
Revan's was interesting enough to keep me going, but I was put off by the fact that it's a continuation of how ONE Revan ended the game. Just little things like describing how he looked really ruined it for me, because all I could think is that mine looked drastically different.
The sith's storyline was not very exciting as far as I read (about five chapters in I believe). It also just really felt like an ad for TOR. "So and so was a sith warrior, he could fight really well. But blah blah was a sith inquisitor, and they had stronger force powers."
I considered reading further to see what happened to The Exile from KOTOR 2, but I realized that it would be even worse than Revan's for being different, considering that canonically The Exile was female and mine was male. And considering what someone who did read the whole thing told me about the ending, I'm glad I didn't bother finishing it.

Hey, has anyone here read Dragons of Eden? I picked to up to bump me over the Super-Saver price when I saw it on Amazon, but I don't know much about it beyond it was a Sagan book.

The Coming Of The Third Reich ~ Richard Evans
(also recently finished The Guns of August by Barbara Tuchman. The story of the start of WW1... theres a sort of cinematic quality to it... as the book ends at the eve of the Battle of the Marne you can really feel a certain "this is a REAL pivot point in history")

Part of my New Years Resolutions is to read the Lord of the Rings trilogy since I haven't read it before. I'm on Fellowship now and should be starting Two Towers in the next week or so.

Yep, I did the same... started on book two, but so far (~60%) it's not as gripping as the first. I was disappointed by some of the turns it took, but it still has a chance to surprise me

Awesome... finally got Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norris. Really good so far... been wanting to read it for a long time now, finally saw it for nothing at used book shop. Glad I picked it up.

Re: Books you're reading now
Just downloaded these two books to my eReader:
The Mirage -- Alternate history where Christian terrorists crash 2 jets into the World Trade Towers in Baghdad on November 9, 2001, starting the United Arab State's War On Terrorism.
Taft 2012 -- Taft is back, running for president in 2012. I saw only that and hit the buy button.

Re: Books you're reading now
Finished all three Hunger Games books. They got progressively worse, IMO... the first is pretty good, but then it starts transforming from an adventure/survival story to something more inward-focused. Lots of soul searching from various characters, etc. The story also gets more and more predictable. So, I'd say, read the first, skip the others.

Look, shiny things!
Well... it could also be a case of misplaced/mismanaged expectations. I went into the series expecting a quick, fun read; I got that from the first book, but then, as you say, it moved into more and more character development and exploration of the relationships between them. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't.. I dunno. It didn't really have any kind of impact on me, but maybe I'm just a cold heartless bastard
For a next book, I'm going to be starting on Jose Saramago's Blindness shortly.
