I'm most of the way through Game of Thrones (book). I have to say, if I hadn't seen the series already I would probably have found it hard to get into. I've bought all the books so far as one complete volume on my Kindle for £30, which by itself makes the Kindle the greatest e-reader in the world

I just finished reading The Hobbit again and I've moved on to The Lord of the Rings. All in preparation for December.

Also... I love my Kindle too. Means I can have The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King in my bag all at the same time without breaking my back carrying it.

I read the curious incident of the dog in the night-time tonight. The ending was wrong.

I really didn't like that book at all. Haven't read it since I was about 10, so i can't remember any reason why other than it having a lot of sex and swearing for what was meant to be a kids book.

Clearly you must launch a massive Internet campaign to have the ending changed.

I've just finished reading all the Unknown Armies sourcebooks ever, along with both the 'Thackery T Lambshead pocket guide to Eccentric and Discredited Deseases' and the 'Thackery T Lambshead Cabinet of Curiosities', both very good short fiction collections. Now onto 'One of Us' by Micheal Marshall Smith and still listening to The Diamond Age. Both heartily recommended.

I am going to read Raymond Feist - A kingdom besieged, because I bought it ages ago and never started reading it.

The dog didn't bark, because it died. It's the story of an autistic kid investigating the death of a dog. It's very realistic. I read it a while ago but can't remember anything "wrong" about the end.
I liked it, but only because my ex-husband worked with autistic people (among other things) and so I recognised a lot of things. As I said, very realistic.

EDIT: Geoff, won't you look at that, the Nook has them for 30 dollars. US dollars. Half what you paid for them. And I can buy it from Europe at that price, since that's what I'm doing right now.

After all of that, the ending is suddenly not logical, and merely there to give the reader warm fuzzies. It was wrong, in my view. *shrug*

@Geoff: In the end, I grabbed the free sample, it was 400 pages long, I figure I'll get an idea from it whether the series is for me.

Having read a dance with dragons, I can tell you its a gripping read, but disappointing (in my opinion) in several ways I can't say without spoiling stuff.

Then again, I enjoy ploughing through things like Lord of the Rings (I think leaving Tom Bombadil out was a good choice, he seemed like a sort of interlude in the books to me) and Robin Hobb (though I got too annoyed at the main character in the Soldier Son trilogy, and only made it half way through and haven't picked up the Dragon Keeper, probably as a result)

Started To Speak Nothing of the Dog, which so far has been a really interesting take on the time travel genre. The most important person in a time-traveling department is a good theater costumer and a symptom of going back to the past too many times is over-the-top flowery language and ridiculous sentimentality.

But he wants to make the correct ending and not just an ending, as he said in an interview

Oh I agree that it needs a good ending (and I liked the ending to Lost!). I just hope he's the one who actually gets to write it.

Yeah, I hope he's at least written down some notes for direction and secured them in a safety deposit box or something. Not to be negative or anything, but not enough people take this sort of thing seriously and I'd hate for the ending not to go the way he wants it to after all this set up.

Any idea if he has a plan for how many more books he reckons the series will go on for?

Two more - The Winds of Winter (of which he's written a few chapters) and the last book is A Dream of Spring

Unless of course he decides to go for an eighth book.

If he only writes two more, and counting six years per book, that's 12 years, I think barring an accident it should be fine. He'd be less than 80.

The next two books will be the last in the series.

And G.R.R.M has been the target of an internet campaign to get him to finish Dance of Dragons.
