So I've noticed
A lot of people mention or talk about the fact that they're moving or have moved recently, and my memory's terrible, so I was wondering who's moving/moved where?
I ask because I'm considering trying to get into the Emily Carr Uni in Van next year (not next school year, but actually next year.. making it two school years away) and to do that I really need to be in Canada, I'm thinking.
There's also the other attractions of PAX Prime being right down the coast, a massive change that I feel my life needs at the moment, the different student culture to that of Britain, and the possibility of meeting and hanging out with all you cool guys and girls that live over that way.
So I guess this is a two part thread: Who's moved or is moving, and what do people know about moving to Canada? I think I recall several people mentoin it as their destination, but I'm curious about the changes people have experienced otherwise, too.
[Edited for spelling Xp]

Re: So I've notice
Well, I recently moved from Victoria to Vancouver (Burnaby actually), so I'm not sure if that's what you're looking for?

I recently moved from Victoria to Melbourne so unless you also plan to move to Australia I am not much help.

Re: So I've noticed
Actually that's great. I've never moved on my own before and was wondering how people found it, dealt with it etc.
Was it tough getting all your stuff over? Did you hire people or ask friends (In my case it'd be a bit difficult to hire )?

Re: So I've noticed
I moved from Vancouver (Burnaby really) to Toronto 3 years ago and it took about a year's worth of planning to really get off the ground. Since it was cross country I had to hire a moving company to ship my stuff out but I got friends to help me pack it and load it into a truck to take to them. That was by far the most expensive and time consuming part. Doing it again I'd just sell or junk everything and get new stuff when I get there. Since I was a tele-commuter at the time I also had the fun of having to bring all my computer stuff on the plane with me to ensure that I could start working right away. The luckiest thing that happened to me in all of this was that I found an open room in a friend's house that I could immediately move into instead of having to make an appartment hunting trip.
So that's all pretty specific and didn't require a Visa or anything but it's not a snap-decision type thing either.

Re: So I've noticed
I've moved from Moncton to Fredericton to Hartland, slowly working my way across my province, and hopefully across Canada to LRR. Though most likely I'll be moving back to Fredericton for Uni in September. Come January though, I have no idea where I'll be.

Re: So I've noticed
Well you're moving out of the country, so unless you're shipping a lot of your stuff over (unlikely and expensive), getting rid of shit is key. For stuff you want to keep, find room with friends or preferably parents to store it. For the rest, Craigslist is your friend. Just get rid of all of it, and as soon as possible. You don't want to be having to catch a cab to the airport and wondering how to get rid of coffee tables.
Another key is to remember that you can buy everything you *need* in the place you're going. Better to take a few changes to get by and buy more clothes there than have bags bursting at the seams. You'll also be able to carry more things you want to keep, like particular books, art, etc.
Other things I like to do; cook a big batch of something that is nutritious and easily microwaved about a few days before you leave. That way when you're packing and cleaning you don't have to worry about cooking, and aren't wasting money on fatty pizza all the time.
I like to make sure I have a "go-bag" (this would probably be your carry-on). It carries everything I need for the time I'm moving, from a few clothes and changes of underpants, toiletries, books, laptop, iPod, pens, pencils and paper, cell phone AND CHARGER, snacks, water, and I like to have a few little tools like a knife or leatherman.
Save all your receipts! It may be different in the UK, but in Canada most moving expenses are tax-deductible.
Also, nice choice on school and area to come to! I hear Emily Carr is pretty awesome.

Re: So I've noticed
I'm moving from rainy Manchester to I'm told warm and southern North Carolina in less than a month now, oh god!? its less than a month away!!!! AHHHHHH I'm not ready. I've slowly been selling stuff, like a few coats I wont need and various knick-knacks and hopefully someone will buy my monitor soon or else its going to be left with a mate..
One thing to note about cooking metcarfre is that you will not be allowed to board a plane with food you did not buy after security so I dont think you'll be able to do that cooking thing.

Re: So I've noticed
I'm flipping coasts in the US, going from new york to LA, but I've moved often and lived in LA before (about a year, total, but not for that long at once) and have a lot of friends and contacts there. I too am looking forward to a shift to the west for a while, but I'm going to miss new york and the east coast (combined, I've spent the largest amount of my life in NY state (though all over it, from NYC to Long Island to Syracuse to Buffalo). I'm also looking forward to things like visiting West Coast Canada and San Francisco (the former of which I've never been to).
The only thing out of country moving entails different is more paperwork and language barriers (not a huge issue in your case), something I'm hoping to avoid as much as possible in my life, and luckily, I'll probably be able to most of the time because I'm a dual citizen, EU and US, meaning that most of Europe is fair game for me to live and work in. Still got the language barrier outside of Britain, the US, and Portugal, but that's not that bad a thing, really. I do hope to live and work in Portugal and/or Britain at some point, though.
All this means for you, Jest, is that you'll need a student Visa.

Re: So I've noticed
Heh, no worries. After all, it was mentioned recently more threads = better, and I wouldn't mind anyway.
Thanks all, some really cool points, Metcarfre especially, I'll take them all into consideration.
I still live at home, hence not having moved on my own before, so there's only furntuiture like my bed and shelving and stuff to get rid of, although it's intiarly possible my folk's'll keep hold of them. Most of the other stuff in my room's either DVDs or books, and while I am lothe to get rid of them I can honestly say I don't read or watch them particularly frequently.
If I was being honest I don't think I could move without my comics, history and mythology books and Terry Pratchet novles, and computer since those are what I refer to and use the most.
Actually, that raises an interestng question too.. What stuff could you guys not do without? Anything you'd take even if it meant strapping it to your back?
Also, OperaGirl, if I recall correctly you acnowledged the vague possibility of moving to Canada. What say you and I rent together? I recon it could totally work.

Re: So I've noticed
I moved to Arizona back in October of last year. It's been a bit of a change.
I also finally sold my beloved go-anywhere do-anything go-go-gadget Audi uberwagon. I was sad to see it go, but the roads here don't need to be subjugated and conquered the same way they do in Alaska.
Edit:
When I moved, I brought my computers, all my books, and a lot of things out of my kitchen. That, along with my car, was about it.
You have no idea how hard it was letting my home theatre go, but there was just no way to move it economically.
Note yet again: I lived in Juneau, Alaska, a town with no road out. Everything must be brought in by barge or airplane. When I moved, the only things I took either fit in my car (books and kitchen things) or fit on two forklift pallets (books and clothes and pillows).
It still cost almost ten grand.

Re: So I've noticed
@cuppa; The cooking thing is more for at home. Man, the last time I was on an international flight was pre-9/11. Good times. I had chocolate, crackers and cheese when I came back from Germany. Sigh.
Also, jokes; while watching the news the other night, the wife mentioned she'd like to go to Greece sometime (this right after a story about the riots). Later, she stated her desire to go to Iceland.
Me; "Where else? How about sunny Bangkok, Thailand? Or what about Korea? I hear it's lovely this time of year. Of course, I'm hankering for some authentic Louisiana gumbo right about now..."

Re: So I've noticed
If it's a big move, I bring the vast majority of my DVDs and a big chunk of my books and comics, which is saying a hell of a lot, as I have a huge addiction to fiction of all kinds. Computer comes with, too, and as of last year, I try not to leave my Uke behind. Furniture, TVs, some old odds and ends, that stuff I'll give away or get rid of, but I'm telling you, I'm going to have a pretty impressive personal library by the time I'm 40.

Moving to Canada from the US or moving from the US to Canada is SOOOO much more complicated than everyone thinks it is. Expect to pay a coulpe grand just filing paperwork, and also either expect to spend several hours going over their confusing-assed website or spending a grand or two on a lawyer.

This. Which is what we are doing. And it sucks. I'm moving from the West Coast of Canada to the East Coast of the USA. Actually, just a few hours away from you, Cuppa. You and I can experience the wtf's of the southern states in sync. And believe me.. there will be WTF'S....
I have to get rid of most of my stuff which is not cool for me being a sentimental woman. I also have a HUGE library of cosgtumes and props from theatre and photography which I don't know what I am going to do. My jeep is already full of the things I want most, which is, my personals (clothes shoes, makeup) Scrapbooking, photography, and camera equipment. Idon't knwo where the fuck and how the fuck ima gt the rest of my stuff. We don't even have a big enough place for both of our things.

Ship it to Victoria to be auctioned off during Desert Bus? Or just put some of it up on eBay, see if you can't get rid of some of it that way.

While I can auction my DVDs (I just realised that moving to Canada would render them unwatchable except on a comp) would be doable, but then again I'll probably leave them for my bro. However. I can't eBay my porn.

Re: So I've noticed
It's for balance, if you and Wraith moved together too close to the awesomeness of LRR, the combined awesomeness of all of you would collapse into a awesome-singularity, consuming the entire universe into the epicenter of your awesomeness. While that would not necessarily be bad, it would be the end of the world, and some pansies might object to that. So by staying apart from LRR, the awesomeness is balanced out better, and the universe can live on.
