Need a new homepage

Postby sdhonda » 09 Jun 2010, 22:53

I've been using google for a long time now. Reasons: It's probably the most reliable site on the internet for loading, its minimal and try to freeze my computer when it loads, and its a search engine.

Of course, modern browser technology makes the third point pointless, and theyve been doing so much weird shit lately that the second point is moot as well.

So... besides this site and wikipedia (which I'm considering, but I need to know other options as well), what are some good sites for a homepage?

if you use something like google reader that could be pretty damn useful, I've been meaning to switch to that but I've had PA as my homepage for like 10 years not so it's a hard habit to break.

I use iGoogle, which lets me add a tonne of useful stuff to my homepage. I have calendar, email, news feeds and google reader all on one page.

Wikipedia would fall under the same reasoning as not using google. Just slap the wikipedia search into your browser. I guess it depends on your browsing habits, maybe a new website, or indeed LRR.

Google reader for me. I used to use iGoogle until I realised that the only thing I really cared about on there was reader.

Having said that, whenever I close my browser it saves my session so that when I open it again I get all my old tabs back. Therefore my homepage is somewhat redundant.

I use Google News because I'm too lazy to get a newspaper most days.

I use the "new tab" page in both Chrome and IE, and the default start page in Firefox. If I used Safari, I'd use the frequently visited sites page, and in Opera, I'd use Speed Dial.

"new tab" page in Chrome.

It shows the 8 most visited sites and also links to recently closed tabs.
It's rather handy.

And was funny when Porn showed up as one the the 8 most visited sites and I mocked my husband for not using the incognito window.

ahhh incognito. It's so kind of google to create a browser type that is specifically designed so you can watch porn in secret

I've used Google Reader for a long time now, and never thought that any other page would be worth it. For new tabs, I use the Safari default of Top Sites, which sounds pretty much like the Chrome new-tab page.

Do you have a router, modem, or other similar device that is controlled through a website interface? Those are always my first choice for homepage, as they load instantly and you find out whenever you open up your browser if there are any problems.

Blackle. It's essentially Google, but everything is black. it supposedly saves energy because it's not displaying the bright, white Google homepage.

Of course, there's always this.

It would be an interesting psychological experiment to see how long one could keep 'that' as their homepage.

I use Firefox, so I just save my tabs each time I close it. No homepage needed.

Which is ofcourse bullshit because the backlight is always on, on a constant level. (If anything black requires MORE energy because the pixels are actively turned black, while white is all pixels off)
