Re: This thread is so gay
It was in Corinth that a meeting between Alexander the Great and Diogenes is supposed to have taken place. The accounts of Plutarch and Diogenes Laërtius recount that they exchanged only a few words: while Diogenes was relaxing in the sunlight in the morning, Alexander, thrilled to meet the famous philosopher, asked if there was any favour he might do for him. Diogenes replied, "Yes, stand out of my sunlight". Alexander then declared, "If I were not Alexander, then I should wish to be Diogenes." In another account of the conversation, Alexander found the philosopher looking attentively at a pile of human bones. Diogenes explained, "I am searching for the bones of your father but cannot distinguish them from those of a slave."

Don't care either way.
I mean seriously, who gives a crap if he was gay, bi, or slutty? He's dead, so the historians make us sit in classrooms rehashing details about crap that don't give a crap about because it's "part of the curriculum". I don't care who banged who, or what charges of incest and pedophilia existed in Renaissance Bulgaria. Making me read about it doesn't make me like it any more.
(Sorry Brad, your studies sound pretty interesting, but I don't think I would want to study it on purpose.)

Re: This thread is so gay
Alexander wasn't 'gay'. Gay is modern term for a person who engages in homosexual activity. In his time it was healthy, normal, and even expected for him to have male lovers. Singling him out for this is now really appropriate.

AS AN ALEXANDER I HAVE AUTHORITY ON THESE SORTS OF MATTERS
SINCE YOU KNOW WE ALL GET TOGETHER AND PLAY BRIDGE ON TUESDAYS
GRAHAM BELL AND I ARE ON A TEAM WE CALL OURSELVES THE DEAD RINGERS
THE GREAT IS A PRETTY COOL GUY BUT HE'S ON A TEAM WITH FLEMING AND THEY'RE ALWAYS BEATING US
I don't know if "gay" as a concept was defined then as it is today. Did he have sex with men? Probably, at some point. Does that make him gay by today's standards? By ancient standards? Kind of? What does that even mean, though?
PREEMPTIVE EDIT: Yeah aeric said what I was trying to say.

Hey, I haven't posted any! I... I'm not one for cartoon porno comics.
EXCEPT FOR THIS ONE HERE
No but seriously I don't think it's controversial. I think tak is just bored by it and resents learning a historical fact that is kind of irrelevant, I don't think it's a question that can be answered (because the question itself is bad), and aeric just points out that it's silly to single him out as gay, because if you do, then most of ancient Greece was "gay," but not in any sense of what the word means today. At least that's what I think is going on?
Diogenes, though, was a badass dude.

I don't think it's v relevant, I just think it's kinda cool.
diogenes p much got a sick burn on the Ruler of the World and trolled the shit out of the aristocracy and folks in general
The city was under seige. Everyone was busy fortifying the walls - some were carrying stones, others were patching the walls, yet others were building battlements. Diogenes, not wanting to appear idle while everyone around him was working so frantically, diligently rolled his barrel back and forth along the battlements. The city fell.
ps; I've read them all cover to cover and I'll be writing up my thesis on them soon
"Robo-Mammalian Sexual Intercourse and its Profound Philosophical Revelations and Repercussions in the 21st Century."

Re: This thread is so gay
So did anyone else see this Wanda Sykes PSA about how saying "That's so gay" is stupid? I saw it randomly on Saturday, I think in the middle of Gladiator on TNT (I appreciate that it was markedly less gory, I just am not a fan of bloody action movies).

I've seen it! We went through a bunch of them at GSA one day. That one was by far my favorite, though.

Fayili said there were more of them, so I wonder who else was in the ads.
TOPIC CHANGE!
Has anyone else seen RuPaul's Drag U? Aside from the fact that it is on LOGO, I have to say that I like the premise a lot and find it to be a guilty pleasure of mine. I think it has something to do with the fact that it's using this hyper-radical femininity of drag to encourage straight biological women to regain some lost part of their lives. It's a makeover show that's over the top, and it's actually pretty good.

I haven't seen it myself, but I am a bit wary of spending time on it. As a good MtF I'll give it a shot but it had better not turn into the barrel of nonsensical cuntery that was Drag Race.
