Re: This thread is so gay
A friend of a friend worked on a game prototype called "A Closed World", which is trying to bring the issues of identity and sexuality into a game (without it feeling like a bolt-on, like "same-sex encounter dialogue options!"). There's an article in Gamasutra about it: http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/3695 ... entity.php and it's playable online. Haven't yet tried it, but it's an interesting concept.

Oh I know about GAMBIT. They are a great program that are trying to use games as more than a form of entertainment. Met some people from MIT GAMBIT Labs at PAX East and they were really cool. I'm gonna try this game out.
EDIT: Just tried the game out. It was fairly easy to beat, but I have to say that it may be the closest thing to actually addressing the internal and external conflicts with a gay person being gay in video games ever. Like, better than Persona's attempt.

Gay news in Hockey!
http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Hockey/NHL/NYRangers/2011/09/27/18744381.html
Simmonds was just recently in the news for having had a banana thrown at him during a shoot out in London, Ontario which is currently being investigated as a hate crime. Now he's back having called Sean Avery a homophobic slur following an altercation on the ice. He allegedly calls him a 'fornicating posterior-buffoon' (to paraphrase the filter). Sean Avery is a notable foul mouthed goon, women's fashion enthusiast (took a break from hockey to be a summer Vogue intern), celebrity fucker and gay rights advocate. I've seen a video from the game and it certainly looks like he's saying it. People are finding it the whole situation a bit hypocritical and a curious how the league is going to respond. Other sports have doled out heavy fines to players who've used homophobic or racist language.

Re: This thread is so gay
My guess, given how Shanahan has been handing out suspension like candy at a Fourth of July parade, is going to hit Simmonds with a few games.
Won't change hockey's on-ice culture though. Homophobic slurs are basically the go-to insult there.

I hope he whacks him with at least a three game suspension and a fine. Bigger would be better.

No suspension for Simmonds...
My hockey league has put out a press release urging the NHL to reconsider. They were even featured on the National and in a National Post article about it. *sighs*

I really wish there was a way under the CBA you could fine players effectively.

I recently saw an interview Anderson Cooper did with his sister on CNN where she said the same thing. Why aren't these kids being treated as sociopaths?

Because homophobia is an important part of conservative politics
Something that runs places like that
Hell, most people in that area would probably defend them

Holy shit. Every time I read one of these I think it can't get worse. And yet, it does. What is fucking WRONG with people?! I agree. Those kids should be treated as sociopaths.

Re: This thread is so gay
Really? A group of jerks should be treated as sociopaths because they were bullies? Most bullies are victims of bullying themselves, frequently at home by their parents and siblings. They're probably hearing anti-gay rhetoric at home and from their friends, and in an effort to look strong in front of their peers they pick on easy targets. Is that reprehensible? Well, yeah. Is that a serious societal issue that needs to be addressed? Absolutely. But sociopaths? That seems excessive.

Usually I'd agree, but they where taking joy in the fact that he killed himself, that's what makes this different.

This.
I mean, seriously, how can you even for a second think that that might be appropriate. Those kids should have to go into fucking witness protection for that kind of thing.

DEATH. THREATS. WHAT THE FUCK.
Confession time; once, in high school, I joked to a friend (while a teacher was within hearing distance) that I was 'making a list'.
I had to go to a psychologist for a month.
What is wrong with you, America?

Sad thing is, I've heard enough hatred around where I live that this didn't really shock me, just kind made me stop and say "Yep... that's happening..."

Re: This thread is so gay
It's disgusting how these kids can say such things, but I definitely think it has a lot to do with the PARENTS. I ask you, how many of you were taught by your parents or guardians that you should "treat others as you want them to treat you"? Why is it that what a person is or believes automatically negates any requirement for respect and kindness inherent to ALL HUMAN KIND?
I'll say it right now, I am a gay Christian, and I believe that above all else, I am called to let God do the judging and I do the loving and compassion. As I heard my mom say a few times, "Last time I checked, God doesn't need my help judging people."
I guess that's why I may end up alone though, because I have strong faith and strong convictions in human decency that most people would see as contradictory and become a turn off. But then again, maybe I will find the perfect nerdy gay guy for me, because at least nerds and intellectuals have the ability to imagine others complexly.

Coming back to the NHL/ Simmonds slur thing, you can petition for the NHL to fine Simmonds here.

QUICKLY, GAYS! TO CANADA!
There are parts of the United States that are better than others. Major cities, for example, are usually at least relatively safe and tolerable, and there are support structures in place if you need them.
Tycherin wrote:Really? A group of jerks should be treated as sociopaths because they were bullies?
I think delighting, reveling in someone's death, especially a peer's, is grounds for suspicion of some serious mental issues. It's one thing if they bullied and picked on him because they themselves were trying to look strong in front of their peers. But the kid is dead. In what universe is it "cool" to make fun of someone who's died? No, there's some deep seated hatred and lack of empathy there, and those kids need counseling.

And once again I feel almost guilty for living in the San Francisco Bay Area.
