Gentlemen and Fair Maidens I ask you a question
What I ask, is the AT-AT an actually functional assault vehicle? I was re-watching the trilogy recently and I was examining these things that I think are utterly awesome. Problem is, they are slow, and easily taken out with the right equipment. How can such a design be so feared through out the universe when it's, well, clunky?

don't go questioning the wisdom of the empire. You'd think after the first time they lost their death star to a small one man fighter they'd want to lock up everything good and tight against that in the off chance you second hand man lets a small rebel strike team down on the small moon projecting the shield around your second unfinished death star. On the off chance they manage to get it down and your imperial fleets admirals are utterly unprepared for the massive fleet maneuvers of an over sized piece of calamari.

Re: Gentlemen I ask you a question (Star wars Related question)
AT-ATs, at least as they were shown and utalized in the movies, were of questionable tactical value (the STs at Endor were downright stupid), but with some modifications, well, they're basically massive tanks/troop carriers.
As to the second death star, once completed it would have being nigh-unstoppable. The Emperor planned for them to try and take out the sheild generator, if you recall, he just didn't plan on the Ewoks allowing them to succeed. With the sheild down, the Imperial Fleet had to quickly reorganize, in the midst of battle, to protect it, opening holes for the rebels to exploit, while small craft that the Death Star hadn't being equipped for yet (still depending on the sheild while those were being built), and the Fleet was out of position for, to make a mad dash for the under-construction sections and reach the power core. This took out much of the C&C structure, demoralized the imperial forces, and reinvigorated the Rebel Fleet, allowing them to press their advantage against the now even more-disorganized foe. Still, their victory was due more to narrative causality at that point than anything else.

Form over function. They don't have to be super effective, because they look so neat.
And really, if you looked out your window, and saw either an AT-AT or a normal tank coming right for you, which would you be more afraid of? Yeah.

I think the point was supposed to be that the entire might of the Empire is not built around technology but the power of the Emperor?

Re: Gentlemen I ask you a question (Star wars Related question)
AT-ATs do seem to be unwieldy. Of course, the way the Empire's stuff was designed (by the makers of the movies) it's a wonder they survived at all. TIE fighters suck. Stormtroopers suck. AT-ATs, despite having obvious, massive flaws, kind of rock the one time we see them. Star Destroyers are cool. Death Stars blow. Shuttles are... shuttles. So, yeah.

Re: Gentlemen I ask you a question (Star wars Related question)
I've always saw the AT-AT as a "shock and awe" type assault transport, a vehicle who's main function is to make ground forces go "SHIT! RUN AWAY!" while providing heavy fire support. And really, how many fighters have tow cables on them? Although, if that armor is "too thick for blasters", how the Hell did a lightsaber cut through with one swipe?
Ugh, this line of thought is reminding me of a conversation with this malorkus who was petitioning to have the movies released in Galactic Basic, which was the language most characters in that universe speak. I tried to tell him that Basic probably sounds like English, but head was really starting to ache from all the sadness.

That may be true, but everybody loves The Doctor.
I've never seen Star Wars (OH GOD WHAT AM I DOING IN THIS THREAD) but I thought they were essentially heavily armored vehicles, like tanks, but that could traverse forested/snowy terrain, since they're up high?

That is fantastic. I want to own a bed like that, awkward explinations not withstanding.
Also, the AT-AT always struck me as really stupid. It's precursor, of sorts, the A6 Juggernaut is far more pratical. Having to change a flat tire would really suck, though.

How the hell have you never seen them? You must watch them, now.
Return of the Jedi showed why legged vehicles are a bad idea in the jungle, and putting all the weight on 4 legs increases the odds of getting stuck in a snowy environment.
In a universe where anti-grav technology is allegedly commonplace, there's really no excuse for them other than "shock and awe".
