Phobias
Ok, after so many people commenting on "telephobia" (fear of phones) due to an offhand comment I made about disliking them - what are your phobias? Spiders? Snakes? Scared of the dark? And what are the weirdest phobias you've heard of? (For example, "triskaidekaphobia" - fear of the number 13.)
If House can say it, why can't I?

Re: Phobias
I have Trypanophobia, fear of injections. I freak out. When my sister had to go for a blood test, the nurses made me stand outside because I was panicking.
Weirdest phobia I've heard of is Arachibutyrophobia, or the fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of your mouth.

Re: Phobias
I have xenophobia. (the fear-of-strangers variety, not fear-of-foreigners)
I find it really difficult to talk to anyone I haven't been introduced to. I have a tendency to shrink away from store employees who are trying to help me or waiters who want to take my order. I hate when people just talk to me out of the blue, and I could never approach someone at a social event etc whom I didn't already know.
I'm a really outgoing person, but around strangers I just get very shy and timid. I usually manage to talk to them, but only after an intense inner struggle.
I'm also a bit claustrophobic (especially in cars) and afraid of heights.

Sharks. Sharks can fuck the hell off and die in volcanoes. I can barely wath them on TV. No other "phobias" as such, but feet really gross me out, and I sometimes get bouts of paranoia.

Strange thing for me, I'm fine with injections for the most part but I have a problem with blood tests. It stems from never having been told that blood vials contain a vacume. On my first blood test I was under the impression that that was my blood preasure and almost passed out. Ever since I have a problem with only blood test.
I'm also claustrophobic. The scene in 'The Descent' where one woman is traped in a narrow passage way had me hyperventilating.

Nevermind.

Re: Phobias
I used to be scared of getting shots, but I got over it.
I'm sort of afraid of heights, but only if there's a chance of me falling, restrained or no. I was currently on a ropes (ROPES?) course that was 60ft. high. Scared me half to death when I almost slipped. I also had to close my eyes on the zip-line initially.

Re: Phobias
You know I don't think I have a real 'phobia' - a crippling fear of something. I'm unreasonably uncomfortable about phoning strangers, but that's about it. I used to be afraid of heights, but after a summer of working on 45-degree roofs, scissor lifts (that other guys would jack up to the full 70-foot height and lock out, leaving you stranded, swaying in the wind), and various mountain climbs that include some pretty crazy unprotected exposure, I'd say I have more of a 'healthy respect' of heights.

Re: Phobias
You can't have a phobia of sharks, a phobia is an irrational fear, and a fear of great toothy killing machines is perfectly rational!
In England.........

Re: Phobias
I'm phobic of, in order of anxiety caused:
Needles
Enclosed Spaces (only when I feel I can't get out)
Crowds (pretty much the same as above)
Hospitals
Sudden Loud Noises
People Messing With Balloons (because they might pop)
Oddly enough, with all this, I have NO stage fright. Being on stage is no harder for me than asking a stranger for the time.

Re: Phobias
While not "phobias", as exposure to such does not entirely incapacitate me, I do have a...rather strong dislike of phones and bugs/insects/arachnids and the like. Also I have difficulty using urinals.

Re: Phobias
Like Gunner, I don't have true phobias but I do not like being dark places (except when I work backstage) don't like heights (unless I have proper safety gear) and yeah, I only talk on the phone when I have to (with a small list of exceptions).
I want a Pinkie launcher.
