Words of Wisdom

Postby 2stepz » 08 Nov 2010, 14:39

So last week my graduate advisor brought in a guest speaker... HIS graduate advisor. Very wise man, tho considered a bit of a heretic in our chosen field. He gave a one hour talk about the human element of engineering and how that effects design. Very interesting... I actually hope I can go back and capture the recorded video.

Aaaanyway. After the lecture he, I, my advisor, and a couple other students were standing in a hallway discussing various and sundry. I mentioned that I didn't know what I wanted to be when I grew up... that once I decided, then I could grow up. Until then, I was a student.

He had a very smooth but very wise response. (I apologize for paraphrasing, I don't have a great memory for exact language.) 'Don't look at it that way. Growing up makes life seem like a destination instead of a journey. Take life one leg at a time. You will be coming to a junction, and have to make a decision on whether to go left or right.' Where I chimed in 'Or go off-roading.' He smiled and said, 'yes, I've done some 4-wheeling in my time, too.'

Anyway... I would like to hear some of the best advice you've ever been given. Has someone told you something that rang so true it changed your point of view? Who was it, and what did they say?

In my case, I would go by my own motto.

"The best thing you can become is yourself."

Think about that for a while, it's pretty deep.

My Grandmother's favourite motto on life: "You can't change the past, and the future's not here yet. So the only thing worth worrying about is today."

Yes, it's just an expanded version of 'Live in the present', but I like the added context. Know the past, know the future is coming up, but until the opportunity comes up to deal with those, focus your energy on where you are.

In all honestly, the phrase 'Find a job you love and you'll never work a day in your life' is one that ment a lot to me.
And I have Keanu Reeves and 'The Making Of The Matrix' to thank for it, thanks dude :D .

"Life is easier the less people expect of you."

I read that in a Calvin & Hobbes strip back when I was in middle school. It worked for a while but in the end, was probably not best advice to take seriously.

So, following that logic, why wouldn't you just be constantly drunk or something?

I can't think of many "pearls of wisdom" that I have received but here's a couple:

I was working once with a girl a few years older than me and everything I was not - cool, confident. One time she told me "if you aren't confident, just fake it." And on several occasions it has really helped.

I also remember the last day on school in grade five when I was saying goodbye to a teacher I had really loved, she randomly said to me "just remember, there's a whole pie in piece". I was so confused at the time because it didn't have anything to do with saying goodbye, but at least now I always spell piece properly!

"Remember, between the idea and the reality falls the shadow."

Eventually I will give this advice to someone who's about to have sex and I hope the confusion brought on by it will ruin sex forever.

Unless he recognises where I got that from. Then it'll just be weird.

I like to think: "If you have a hammer, everything fits. If it doesn't, get a bigger hammer.

If it doesn't go, use more force. If it breaks it needed replacement anyway.

And the mythbusters motto: "When in doubt: C4" is always applicable."

And in correlation with the life is a road analogy, don't take the highway, use the scenic route. It takes you longer to get there, and it might require some "off-roading" but the journey is that much more rewarding.

On a more serious note, I came across this about a year ago and I thought it had a lot of really good things to say:

Boy: "Nanna, what is love?"

Nanna: "you know, I've always thought of it as something natural and organic; yes it is rough and on the outside it is ugly, but let it grow and look inside and you will find a soft centre."

Boy: "That's the most beautiful thing i've ever heard, do you really think that's what love is?"

Nanna: "Love, i'm sorry, i thought you said a melon"
