I shall throw out another suggestion, as many people as can afford it buy "souvineers" for him and send them back to lrr after they send him on with some sort of postcard attached, then when db5 comes around there is hundreds of little entertaining souvineers and letters from a traveling cd.

Ok, I just went through the thread and it seems we have a clustering of people on the eastern seaboard of the US, a couple of people (plus the LRR crew) over in the Vancouver/Victoria area, the English guys and gals, and then a reasonable number in either Australia or New Zealand.

There are others, like the Dutch guys, and a few people who live further inland in the US (plus someone from San Francisco).

Just for people's info.

East Bay, not San Francisco! Jeeze. Get it right. And I'll be good giving out my information in a week. Assuming I don't have to before then, it's all good.

just an idea:

would it be safer to only send Alphie to people who have been on the forums for a substantial amount of time?

and on that note, i don't think i'd be up for this because of postage.

Bleh, not 18 till April, so I guess I'm out, unless he's still being shipped around at that point.

I think it's reasonable to expect Alphie will only be sent to people approved by Psychopez since he is the doll's owner. Trouble is, being new to the forums himself, he might not know many of the faces here very well.

Additinaly, I'd be happy to receive Alphie & show him a good time. I'd introduce him to #4 & they could have a little reunion. I'd also show him Madison, Wisconsin & the wonders & secrets hidden therein. It would be a grand old time.

I don't think there are too many truly unsavory regular members that would steal Alphie or do something otherwise unfortunate.
Of course accidents do happen, but let's just hope that fates shine favorably on the little traveler.

There was another thread where someone made a rough map of the locations of all the LRRmons with Google maps using people's area codes. Could someone make one so we have a rough estimate of where everyone is?

We could couple that with the standard Travelling Salesman Problem deal to find the optimal order to ship him wherein we minimize shipping costs. For example, while it may seem smarter to send it from Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, to Pennsylvania, what with them being so close, it might be cheaper to send it from Waterloo all the way to Victoria, BC, Canada because of international shipping.

Stuff like that.

Damn, if I still worked for my last company, it would take me all of 10 minutes to create a matrix that would find the optimal route (being a shipping company, they're kind of experienced calculating those things).

Yeah, we want to find the optimal pattern to ship it everywhere with minimal costs. I'm in Los Angeles, although don't have much opportunity or much familiarity with the area to get very interesting sights.

Hmm...I cooould figure out the logistics, probably wouldn't be too difficult, to get a picture of it with the Hollywood sign in the background or some such. Other than that I can get some here at UCLA. Also, make things a little simpler, I can do a direct hand-off to Fayili instead of shipping it, so that's one less mailing of him as a package.

Lil' alphie may find Dallas/Ft worth incredibly bland but I'd be happy to give him a tour. It would be good for me too since I haven't explored the area much myself...

I'd be up for this, though given the dreariness of Reading I'd probably have to take him on a day trip to London to ensure some worthwhile holiday snaps.

And make that +2 for Graham's journal idea.

No one from Toronto yet? Excellent, I will happily show him around the city. And I've shipped stuff for the craft-along, so Tally could probably vouch for my reliability. =P I love this idea, it sounds like a lot of fun.

Cause it had, what, three posts, years ago, used a name that really doesn't apply to me n'I don't particularly like, and this is the name I was using for Desert Bus. Decided it was worth making the change, as I intend to actually be around here on these most excellent forums.

I further support the journalry. And I can think of a few good places to take pictures around here, whether I go out to landmarks or not, wherever they are...

So I think we need to figure out how to make this cheapest for everyone. We should probably post our country and city in a post if we are interested and then plan up a mailing route.

I like this idea.
Count me in.

Limerick, Ireland.

Note: in Ireland 'ye' is used as the plural of 'you'. It rather neatly avoids confusion online.

I'm going to be compiling a google docs spreadsheet of everyone's who's interested and their general area tonight and tomorrow, to get a feel of the general path.

Journal idea is a go, I happen to have plenty of moleskins lying around.

You'll be happy to know Alphie already made a friend, one of my snow(wo)man Pez dispensers named Celes and he are bestest friends and she's only a little bit creeped out, least of all my Pez.

So from the get go Alphie won't be lonely as he travels the world.

On a personal note, the fact that you guys are gung-ho about an idea from a forum newbie makes me feel a lot better about finally taking the plunge and joining the forums.

Firstly, see my post at the top of the page.

Secondly, I made my estimates by doing just what you said, plotting people's rough locations onto a map, but when I tried to upload the photo to an image hosting site it wouldn't work.

As I said earlier, a lot on the eastern side of the US, Britain has it's fair share, as does Australia and New Zealand. Then we have others dotted around the place, such as the people on the Pacific coast.
