To the defense of Twlight

Postby mrshale » 07 Dec 2010, 09:13

After having a discusion of twilght in lectures today, i found myself getting somewhat angry at the people in my group who consider it poorly written, un-ethical and that bella is anti-feminist. So i ask you why is this?. For those of you who will probably verbally bash me for reading twilight at 22 quite frankly i say up yours. Because i know plenty of adults who read it, people in their 30's and 40's and not just women, men too. But i digress. In faireness it's not written on the leagues of Tolkien or Austen but it's sold thousands of copies worldwide something many people who slate the book will never do. And as for Bella being anti-femanist, it's quite possibly the biggest load of bullshit i've heard. She's with a man who is doing everything he can to stop her doing what she wants and she does it anyway. If she was anti-feminist she would do as he says. And this wholse buissness of it being necrophelia or beastality, grow up, it's just a book.
So i ask you, what exactly is people's problem with them?

Bella got a truck for a birthday present but didn't like it because it was "Ugly". That's when I stopped and realized, "I don't like the main character". Then threw the book away into a fire pit for Canada day.

Ah that was a good day

Well as long as it isn't spam. I hate spam, I hate the smell, I hate the sight, I hate the taste. It's simply gross. I withhold further comments until the person in question (mrshale) steps forward to confirm or deny and also to clarify his/her user name. .

I lol'd.

Also, if the scene from the film that LRR acted out for Desert Bus this year is any indication of what the books are like, I think I'd rather listen to Vogon poetry. Or be eaten by a Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal. Ugh.

To the OP;

I have not read all of the Twilight saga, and thus cannot comment on its feminism virtues or sins.

But happily, Moviebob has.

This is a neat summation of the case against Twilight. Give it a read and tell us what you think.

Don't kill me, but I've read all four Twilight books and I'm 23 and I have to admit that I enjoyed them. Not, as great literature, but as what they are, trashy teenage romance novels. Sure I wanted to reach through the books and smack Bella and tell her that someone that 'loves' her shouldn't be stalking her like a psycho killer, but I still enjoyed them.

Now the movies... they are just laughably bad, the writing and the acting is just bad.

The actors who play Bella and Edward both are quite vocal about how little they regard the source materials, Robert Patterson in particular hates Edward and is disgusted and frightened by the way Edward's fans behave.

"Femanism" or no, the woman really should have done some sort of research into the mythologies and cultures she was representing. Vampires =/= Jonas Brothers

QFT.

I thought the books were probably passable teenage dramas with vampires in them...but I watched the first two movies and no. No they're not. If what I heard at Desert Bus is taken from the story/script, then...wow.

Didn't someone else on the forum say in a previous thread that the wolf guy wanted to get it on with Bella's child right after it was born? Isn't that pedophilia + half necrophilia (comatose) + bestiality promotion right there?
