There's only one metal band worth a damn. If it's not Pantera it's not metal.

But seriously, most the bands mentioned in this thread I wouldn't classify as metal. (Slipknot? Metal? Are you fucking kidding me? *Repressed Metal Head Rage Raising*) But that's the problem with the genre (or rather genre's in general) and one of the things that have made me shy away from popular music.

Aww, Sonata Arctica. I had a nostalgic metal monday moment a few weeks ago with much SA and the 69 Eyes (not metal but nostalgic).

No the problem with genre's in general is people thinking that because a band doesn't fit into their very specific definition of said genre is some how a less valid form of music.

It's like saying Nine Inch Nails is industrial or Portishead is jazz. They may have been inspired by something, but they're not that.
You wouldn't say Mozart is baroque, would you?

It has nothing to do with the quality of the music. I'm not saying a band is invalid because of genre. Just misclassifications abound here.

For purposes of education, I recommend this: http://mapofmetal.com/

And it's not like Hellyeah or Five Finger Death Punch are not metal. It's that they are just not very good. *scnr* ;)

I suppose my favourite metal band that other people have heard of would probably be Nightwish, if only because adding their music to anything automatically makes it that much more epic.

I only really like a few metal bands, and it doesn't really make up a big amount of my collection at all. However, Metallica are awesome and almost certainly my favourite metal band.
