Can't say I blame you there. While I do remain hopeful that they can do something good with this, I still say this was a dumb decision and that it's an obvious ploy to sell toys.

To be honest, I'm not surprised by this new development. There's a theory going around that the showmakers were planning this all along and have dropped several subtle hints throughout older episodes. Apparently, the purpose of Twilight Sparkle becoming a princess is to be the bridge between night and day, ie Luna and Celestia, hence the name Twilight Sparkle. Personally, I don't mind the change, but I've only been a mild fan of the show.
