Re: Any Bronies up in here?
Liked it.
Downsides first, a lot of people have commented that the big bad King Sombra was pretty much a characterless dragon. I can't disagree, particularly when you compare him to Discord. But I wonder if that really is all we'll see from him.
A little wobbly on deciding what kind of tone the episode wanted to have, sawing back between two strong tones like light hearted japes and dark creepiness tends to undercut both. Didn't really distract too much, but the shift in tones was handled better in the last season's finale.
And of course the whole exercise was just to sell 'Crystal' variations on the little plastic ponies.
And the upsides the animation quality is as good as ever, never jarring me out of suspension of disbelief. And hello our now recurring characters Shining Armor and Cadance.
Despite the tone issue, the story works okay. Not quite as great at the previous big-epic conflicts, but it works.
Interesting showing that Celestia can and will use 'dark' magic too, and that Twilight could so easily copy her. And ending on a suggestion that Luna will be teaching Twilight from now on? Now where are they going with that...
Also, if we don't get multiple occurrences of the Sunshine Sunshine dance during Desert Bus, I will be disappoint.

Re: Any Bronies up in here?
Has anyone else picked up the MLP iOS/Android game?
I grabbed it earlier this week and, although the game play is fairly similar to most of the other world builders out there, it does a few things differently and overall I'm having quite a lot of fun with it.
The only major issue I've got so far is that it places quite a significant emphasis of the social aspect, with an entire third currency based around social interactions, such that you can't unlock a whole bunch of the ponies without it, and I'm fairly certain you can't even buy the currency with real monies, not that I'd particularly want to.
So if anyone else has picked it up, my gameloft live ID is Myrph, feel free to add me on there!

Re: Any Bronies up in here?
Rewatched It, it seemed a bit fractured. The sense of urgency just didn't seem to be there until the absolute very end. I think it's because king sombra was pretty much a plot device and not a character and I think it was the fair they had to set up. Which was a task that seemed shoehorned in. I still think discord was the best bad guy to date.
Oh and I didn't care for the show tunes in this episode. Although I don't think anything will beat "winter wrap up"
Also just noticed Shining Armour didn't have a crystal variant.

King Sombra's design reminded me of an 80's anime villain. In a good way.

Re: Any Bronies up in here?
So I did a good job at keeping away from spoilers before the episodes aired. And I share most of the feels about the episodes:
Music: meh.
Villian: meh.
Animation: WOW
Celestia/Luna doing some Nick Fury scheming: -monocle pop-
But I could not resist the lure of spoilers for long, and hit a reddit thread. I didn't see much, but here is a tidbit that gives me hope for the season arc. SPOILERS AND POTENTIAL SPOILERS:
In the promos for the reason of the season, in the shot of Applejack shrinking, there are statues of Trixie in the background.
And she's wearing a pendant with King Sombra's icon.
Season long arc with a villain team up?
And now my own theory, assuming this is true: Luna's teaching of Twilight delves into how she unlocked Nightmare Moon. And Twilight'll need to do something similar, unlock her Twilighty version of NMM as part of this arc.
This is wild mass guessing, but Luna can't use the green eyed evil magic because that magical aspect was lost when NMM was defeated. But we've never seen Celestia's version of NMM unlocked, which is why see can green eyed evil magic. And Twilight can green eye evil magic too...
Also, yes, Twilight is what happens when powers of day combine with powers of night, Alicorn Twilight blah blah blah just had to get that out of the way.
End spoiler block.

I mean both are series specifically targeted at young girls that have been co-opted by men in their late teens to early thirties, some of whom (not all) are adamant that the show is aimed at their demographic, not the actual target demographic.
I say this as a man in his early thirties who was recently introduced to Sailor Moon and thought it was fucking awesome.

Re: Any Bronies up in here?
I just finished watching the season 3 premier. I just find it... lacking somehow. It's not bad, it just feels like it comes up short on story. The first and second season premieres had a much more active baddy, while this time around King Sombre is just there... Never actively a thread, never really actively doing something until the very end. Nightmare moon was constantly interfering with the mane six getting to the castle, Discord was actively screwing around with their minds and friendship, sombre was just there.
