I'll be happy knowing most of the snow is limited to the peaks. In fact, when you've got a mountain range and what technically is the Pacific Ocean both in view, it's a lot more interesting and motivating than hills, fields and woods for a background. And then you've got Endor far outside the city, so yeah, I've got no qualms with the environment.

Well I took the teaching gig. The pay is crap but the XP is nice and I get medical insurance, which I've been without for almost a year now. Thank y'all who chipped in.

Re: Advice Thread
I have an interview for a job in the UK. I have been offered some choice in the time of the interview. Should I be interviewed in the morning their time (late night my time) or late afternoon their time (morning my time)? I am more of an evening person than a morning person.
We are all made of star dust. However we are also made of nuclear waste.

Re: Advice Thread
Depends whether you operate best with preparation or not. Personally I've always done better at interviews when they've been stupid o'clock in the morning and I've not prepared at all.
Good luck though!

Re: Advice Thread
Sounds like you'd be better off doing morning their time. Makes you come across as accommodating, and plus interviewers don't like doing them in the afternoon. They just want to clock off and head home.

Re: Advice Thread
I'd agree, morning their time and make sure you have an easy day before hand so you don't look too tired if you're on camera.

I also agree, morning their time probably slightly improves your chances of having a good interview.

Re: Advice Thread
So last month I paid the credit card and I have been checking that online throughout the month and it was all perfect. The payment has been registered and it was all fine and dandy. Today I enter visa online and it's like that never happened. That apparently they haven't registered the payment at all and it was all a dream. Now, I have proof of paying last month and I intend to call visa and tell them there has been a mistake.
Nope, visa is not taking my call.
I'm THIS close to a nervous breakdown.
Any advice?

Getting a new laptop. I know both of these are better than my old one (for all the Windows 8; ugh). I'd like to know how they compare to one another, since I'm not good at comparing specs.

Re: Advice Thread
I prefer HP, that's what my current and previous laptop were. I've used them day in day out at least 10 hours or more at a time and they've never steered me wrong.
The AMD processor on the HP is only slightly better than the Acer. i can't find the GPU of the Acer so I can't compare to the HP. I'm concerened about that.

Re: Advice Thread
I'll say the HP one is somewhat better. The differences are marginal and it's also quite a bit more expensive. The HP one has a touchscreen, so there's that, and the Acer one has a slightly higher capacity battery.
I think I would be right in saying the CPU in the HP laptop is ever so slightly better than the Acer one, but I'm not confident in making that call.
And I know this isn't specifications but the Acer one appeals to me for being less glossy, while the HP one is almost shouting "I'M GLOSSY" from the rooftops.

Re: Advice Thread
I'm not really too knowledgeable about graphics or processors, but from the looks of things the HP doesn't offer much more for over $100 extra. If you're planning to use this for just general browsing and working, I think you're fine getting the Acer. If you want it to be able to handle anything heavier (games, complex video editing, and so on) then I can't tell you exactly how much difference there would be.
And for what it's worth, I've been using a laptop from the Acer Aspire line since 2008, and while it's on its last legs, it has outlasted a whole lot of other computers of people I know who bought at the same time. Obviously mine is a different model, but I can say there were making good products then, at the very least.

Re: Advice Thread
Here's the actual specs for each: Acer HP
They look comparable in almost every way except the Acer is slightly lighter, has 15 minutes more battery, and is $150 cheaper (and doesn't have a touchscreen, but I don't care about that).
Basically, if the HP isn't going to offer me some staggering difference, I'll probably go for the cheaper one.
Probably about the most graphics and resource-heavy game I'll want to play would be Borderlands 2; most other games I have are even older, and are usually indie and/or puzzle games.

Re: Advice Thread
HP have been putting faulty CPU fans in their PCs for nearly 4 years. Whether or not it will break on you, or if it is in warranty if it does is entirely up to chance(Although apparently, chances are that it WILL break at some point). The worst part is that if you aren't in warranty and it breaks, that's it, it's gone.
My brother had an Acer a few years back, and the graphics card would melt every few months.
Given the choice between the two, I say go for Acer, since I know for a fact that HP still has this problem, while my brother's experience with Acer was over 5 years ago.
However, if you plan on it being within warranty the whole time you own it, then this is entirely irrelevant.

These are refurbished, so warranty's only 90 days.

I suggest going for the Acer, then.

Re: Advice Thread
I've been getting some advice that a 1.8 GHz AMD processor is still better than a 2.16 GHz Pentium, so this might be a better option than the previous HP (especially since I don't want a touchscreen): http://computers.woot.com/offers/hp-pavilion-17-3-amd-quad-core-laptop-81?ref=cnt_wp_3_8
Edit: Okay, HP fan problem has been confirmed by people in chat as well. I'm perfectly fine going with the Acer. XD Thanks everyone for helping me figure this out.

Re: Advice Thread
A faulty CPU fan would explain some of the issues I've had with my HP. Fortunately I really only use it as a raiser for my work laptop these days.

Re: Advice Thread
You'd be able to work as an accountant? (I've heard its not a bad job and pays decently.) The only problem then being you'd work as an accountant. Something I'd find more boring than watching our machines cycle wafers in my current job. Given they are fully enclosed opaque machines with no way of telling whats happening other than some computer schematics thats saying something!
If it's just an accountancy course it might be a big help if you ever get to the point where you become responsible for financing/financial stuff/ incoming sales/outgoing sales/etc. (Maybe like if you start your own company or work your way into being an important part of one) Knowing how certain numbers/data points given about a company work, how depreciation and stuff figure into the operation of a company and more of that sort of stuff I think it could be a very interesting course. Personally I found the accountancy/company economics course I had in college to be pretty interesting on a "good to know as part of my education" but definitely NOT for me as a full time job. So it's mostly up to you.
