Web Comics!

Postby JustAName » 06 Jun 2011, 13:22

Alright, you guys have prompted me to post my list of webcomics from my RSS feed and try and figure out how I found each one. I'm sorry.

All New Issues - Linked/crossovers with GWS
Amazing Super Powers - Word of mouth
(ASP Hidden Comics) - RSS so I don't have to keep clicking through to the site
A Softer World - Word of mouth
BACK-SPACE - Word of mouth
Bad Machinery - New project after Scary-Go-Round, which was word of mouth or from QC
ButterNutSquash - Crossover with GWS/guest week - hiatus
By Moon Alone - Not sure. Maybe TWC? Not updated in forever, probably not worth it.
chainsawsuit - seeking out more of Kris Straub's work
Clockworks - "rivalry" between creator and RMR's creator
Ctrl+Alt+Del - Probably just because it was well-known
Devil's Cake - Red String link possibly. Not really worth it.
Diesel Sweeties - Word of mouth or from QC.
Dndorks - Banner ad. Probably not worth it.
Dominic Deegan - Word of mouth. One friend loves it, another hates it.
Dreamless - Sarah Ellerton on art, so had to read it. Ended.
Dresden Codak - Word of mouth, fucking gorgeous, read it.
Dumbing of Age - He announced it on Shortpacked!
Earthsong - Link from Phoenix Requiem. Pretty but slow updating.
Eerie Cuties - Same artist as Menage A 3, et al. Good for a dumb laugh.
Explosm - Word of mouth.
F Chords - Kris Straub announced it.
Fall on Me - Link from Thistil Mistil Kistil.
Flipside - Banner ad.
FreakAngels - Word of mouth. Interesting.
Geebas on Parade - Jennie Breeden's (Devil's Panties) larping comic.
Girl Genius - Word of mouth One of the first ones I read. Amazing. All my <3s.
Girls With Slingshots - Word of mouth.
Girly - Link from QC? Over, but don't have the heart to remove it.
Goats - Someone linked me to Multiverse, so I went back and read this as well.
Gunnerkrigg Court - Word of mouth or maybe QC. Also all my <3s.
Hark, A Vagrant! - Word of mouth.
Homestuck - Pestering and badgering by friends.
In His Likeness - Mention from GWS.
Johnny Wander - Word of mouth.
Khaos Komic - Word of mouth, updating though the RSS isn't. Great comic.
Kiwi Blitz - Mention from PvP as she worked with Kurtz, I think?
KUKUBURI - Same artist as BNS, hiatus.
Lackadaisy Cats - Word of mouth. So many <3s.
Least I Could Do - Read LFG, poking around the site.
"Less Than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal" - Word of mouth.
Looking For Group - Word of mouth.
Magick Chicks - Same artist as Menage a 3 et al. Spinoff of Eerie Cuties.

octopus pie - QC link.
Order of the Stick - Word of mouth.
Penny and Aggie - Going through a friend's list of webcomics looking for more to read.
Penny Arcade - Who even knows. Possibly word of mouth.
PvP - Ditto.
QC - Word of mouth.

Real Life Comics - Word of mouth.
Red Moon Rising - Don't remember, maybe TWC? Gorgeous at any rate.
Red String - Word of mouth I believe.
Remember - Word of mouth.
Rock, Paper, Cynic - Word of mouth or link.
Sam and Fuzzy - Maybe the "rivalry" between him and Jeph Jaques. Don't recall.
Scary Go Round - Haven't the heart to remove it. QC or word of mouth.
Scenes From A Multiverse - Word of mouth I THINK.
Shortpacked! - Word of mouth (continued after reading Roomies! etc.)
Sinfest - Word of mouth. Has calmed me down on more than one occasion. <3
Sister Claire - Word of mouth. A bit silly. Not really worth it.
Sluggy Freelance - Word of mouth. First webcomic, really. (Was reading VenusEnvy when I was littlish, but don't think it really counts.)
Something Positive - You know, I don't even remember. Word of mouth or QC I suppose.
Starslip - Dunno.
STRIPTEASE - Banner ad? Eh.
Supernormal Step - Link here on the forums!
Surviving The World - Word of mouth. Lots of my <3s.
Templar, Arizona - Link from somewhere.
The Adventures of Dr. McNinja - Word of mouth.
The Devil's Panties - Word of mouth. Several <3s.
The Dreamland Chronicles - Word of mouth?
The Gutters - Guys of LFG and LICD kept saying to go read it.
The Meek - No idea.
The Pale - Link from Thistil I believe? Or RMR.
The Phoenix Requiem - Word of mouth. Don't have the heart to remove it.
The Zombie Hunters - Word of mouth? Not sure.
Thistil Mistil Kistil - Link from somewhere, I think. The author links lots of comics regularly.
TwoKinds - Word of mouth (from a friend who is a furry, yes, no surprises there).
Wapsi Square - Word of mouth or link but can't recall from where.
Weregeek - Must be word of mouth.
xkcd - Word of mouth.
Zebra Girl - Word of mouth, rarely updates.

That's 86 upon quick count, but a few are no longer updating, so let's call it an even 80.

Can't, still going through It's Walky!. It is a very long comic.

EDIT: Well, I had read some of Shortpacked! a while ago, but the references to the past comics in the series drove me nuts. Over the last few years, I've become completely unable to get into something in the middle. Also, I was in a giddy excitement to read the actual story, and was constantly bothered by the filler, most of which I did not care for one bit.

Really? I thought It's Walky! was too... dark, I guess, for my taste. The characters never seem to catch a break. Shortpacked had the same problem for me, though not at first. Dunno, it felt too... mean-spirited. Don't get me wrong though, the story and art are both great and high-quality.

Here's a couple to add to your list:

  • Nerf Now!, drawn by Josue Pereira, is a gaming comic that I came across thanks to an archive binge on TVTropes of all places. Nerf Now's main gimmick is the extremely cutesy art-style and tongue-in-cheek fanservice. It started off as a strait TF2 comic but evolved over time to parodying several different games, doing topical humor, crossovers and longer story arcs.
  • The Oatmeal, drawn by Matthew "Oatmeal" Inman, is a comic that specializes mainly in very bizarre and often wrong humor, to the point that it even rivals Kathleen in terms of insanity. Most comics are in the form of short stories, lists, "helpful" lessons of some sort or just short one panel comics that go up in the blog. Oh, and as an added bonus Oatmeal has perhaps the best policy of dealing with hate mail on the entire internet: respond with even more hatred and mercilessly make fun of them after the fact.

Also, I brought up my friend Graham Shine (Archemetis on these forums & The Escapist) in the other thread. On his deviantART page he has a lot of different random comics, ranging from his current series "MiniGames", the now defunct "Playin' the Game" and a few other random things, but the big one is a project he's been working on launching for a while; a webcomic called "Lady Cadaver" about a young zombie girl that escapes the zombified town she lives in to explore the wider world.

... Graham is unfortunately suffering from "Scott Ramsoomair Syndrome" and hasn't been updating, but I'm fairly certain it's just because he hasn't had the time. Still, he's a great sketch artist and cartoonist. He actually drew my current avatar and a drawing of Scott Pilgrim and Ramona Flowers in subspace that hangs on the wall over my computer in my office.

Do stop by and give his work a look if you can. It might encourage him to keep at it.

Dr. McNinja:

For over the top crazy action sifi random comedy...and ninjas. Not very good with overviews of comics, but it is a fun little comic that has interesting story arcs and it doesn't take it self seriously at all.

I think I am the only person on this forum who reads MS Paint Adventures (specifically Homestuck) which is CRAZY. MSPA is absolutely pushing the boundaries of what it means to be a webcomic, and the artist, Andrew Hussie, has crafted something completely unique.

Yes the current adventure, Homestuck, has a big backlog. But it's worth it.

The newest webcomic I'm into is Gunnerkrigg Court, a beautiful webcomic that is especially near to my heart because it's got kickass female characters and a really interesting setting.

Round out my reading with Penny Arcade/SMBC/Dinosaur Comics/xkcd/Hark! A Vagrant/Awkward Zombie/Dresden Codak/. Those are the main ones, I think. I've probably forgotten a few.

Oh, and also The Less Than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal. Which is beautiful and makes me feel all whistful and wibbly inside. First page is actually here. You must read this.

Oh, and if you haven't read minus, set aside a about 30 minutes and read it. Makes me feel the most like Calvin and Hobbes does...

And then go and read Great!, by the same artist.

AHEM! I read Homestuck! It's there in my list! :P

I also forgot to list Kagerou because the comic itself doesn't have an RSS, just the livejournal of the author. And it updates somewhat infrequently.

Oh my goodness, you're right! You just gained twelve amazingness pips on your cumberbund of fantasticness! You rocket up your eschelader, from Chum-tastic all the way to Fantasti-friend! :O

And you read TJ and Amal too! And GUNNERKRIGG! <3<3<3<3

But, uh... anyway.

MSPA, Gunnerkrigg, TJ and Amal, xkcd, and Hark! A Vagrant were all word of mouth. I think I found SMBC, minus, and Great! through Dinosaur Comics.

Penny Arcade, god only knows. That's the only one remaining from the early days, before I had realized Megatokyo didn't make any sense, before 8-bit theater ended, before Homestar Runner stopped, and before I realized CAD was crap and not funny and I couldn't figure out why I had been reading it, before I realized Dominic Deegan was unfortunately cliche, and before I gave up on reading through the Sluggy Freelance backlog and decided I didn't really like it anyway.

In the list of things I follow regularly, I forgot Order of the Stick (pretty great) and PhD Comics (GRAD STUDENTS! YOU FEEL MY PAIN). There are a few other webcomics that I don't follow, but just let accumulate and read through the backlog every few months, mostly so that my RSS list doesn't end up like Fayili's. :P Questionable Content is one of these, as is Johnny Wander (though I LOVE Johnny Wander, don't know why I don't just add it to my feeds), The Meek, and Family Man, which I haven't seen mentioned yet.

Oh man! Three whole Boondollars!

*ahem*

Anyways, I'm going to go back and edit the post to be more readable and hopefully have links sometime in the near future. I might also go through the list and give more in-depth impressions of a few of the comics, if anyone would be interested... But I rather feel I would have to make a whole 'NOTHER thread for that, as I wouldn't want to take over this one.

If I could go back in time and post before you, it would have been mentioned already, because I read it. AND LIKE IT.

Other webcomics I read that have not been mentioned yet would be PhD Comics and Treading Ground. I think the rest have been covered,

Gunnerkrigg Court is one of my favorites too. I think my favorite part of that one is the author's comments on each page.

I think Flintlocke's Guide To Azeroth was the first webcomic I ever read, and it was fantastic. I'll admit it: I laughed my face off at the chuck shot. That was slapstick at its finest. It's too bad that never got going again.

A couple of other now-defunct comics are Ozy and Millie and (of course) 8-bit Theater. Both are worth a look-see if you have time on your hands.

Wanna know two great, now over (or basically dead) comics?

1/0 http://oneoverzero.comicgenesis.com/ which is fucking brilliant. It's only 1000 strips, read it.

and Dragon Tails http://dragon-tails.com/, my first webcomic ever.

Here's one I'm betting people haven't heard of. Exterminatus now! http://exterminatusnow.co.uk/

It's like Warhammer 40K crossed with Sonic the Hedgehog. Well, the artstyle of sonic the hedgehog.

This thread will serve me well over that long summer coming up.
