Why not customise it with a clear plastic shell, or some rad decals?

I think the bear is onto something. You'll need stickers.

*looks over the list again* Apparently you'll need a graphics card, too. Anything in mind on that front?

Looks like an awesome computer. Are there any games these days that really benefit from super hardcore hardware anymore?

Maybe it's just my own impression, but I get the sense that graphics and processing power, particularly as they relate to gaming, have more or less plateaued. I'm probably both ignorant and wrong.

I know CPUs have plateaued for gaming. My understanding there is no point going beyond a i5 2400. If you want to overclock you might want a i5 2500K for a bit more for its unlocked multiplier. For gaming there is no point going up to a i7. Sure you might get a coupler percent higher frame rate but you are paying a hundred dollars more. At this point all you are paying for is an enlarged e-peen.

GPU = graphics card.

Honestly, just make sure your psu gets enough power to everything and it should be smooth sailing.

Yeah, don't skimp on the PSU. Coolermaster are a good brand, but I think 1KW might be excessive, check your wattage requirements for the other components, you might get away with a 750w.

Also check the connector requirements for the GPU and make sure that it has the right leads, although as it's modular it should be easy enough to get them.

Oh and check to see if your CPU comes with Thermal paste included, otherwise you'll need to buy that before you can put the system together.

If you want some good advice for a reasonable but future-proof rig, Pick up a magazine called Custom PC. They have great kit guides, and the current mag has a feature for building a decent-spec future-proof PC for £410.

for HDD, I recommend a 120gb SSD as a boot/app disk. Then maybe 1 or 2tb of Striped drives (with mirror if you want to).
I much prefer a Corsair Obsidian 800D case. Its a classic with amazing cooling potential.
Don't rely on the stock cooler that came with the i7, pick yourself up a Corsair H60 closed loop instead.

If you are ok with overclocking (doesn't need to be now but maybe in the longer run) go for an i5 2500k which is very easily overclocked to the i7 2600k. Combine it with a scythe mugen II or something. i5 is about 100 bucks cheaper and can easily get those speeds.

Do you do any other stuff on there? Because otherwise 16GB of RAM is overkill. 4GB is more than enough at the moment and you could always go for 8GB (2x4 in dual channel) to be safe. But 16GB is just silly if it is just gaming. If you do a lot of rendering and all that sure, but otherwise it's simply overkill and you could spend that money on other things.

For the hdd go ssd for windows then raid a few regular ones.

With the motherboard make sure it is a revised sandy bridge (usually designated as v3 or b3) to avoid any sata/raid problems.

You said rig twice in the title. You are building a rig to build your computer for you? If you can do that, I would pay you to build one of those for me!

OT: AMD is very good if you are on a budget. The hexacore AMD is very cheap, and you can use that money for a more expensive GPU. Also, being a big PC gamer I recommend a 2tb hard drive as a main drive with a separate for boot, then partition the 2tb however you want. Also for the blu-ray drive, I have one but don't use it. It was annoying to find software for just to use it to watch movies, and now that I have a ps3 I don't even use my comp to watch my blu-rays anymore, so keep that in mind.

Well, good luck with your computer building rig.

Hope you don't appreciate your eyes.

You see, if you go for 3D, you should first know what kind of an effect 120Hz 3D has on your eyes.

Also, Crossfire? Yeah...

AMD and MSI chipset...

1kw PSU...

RAID...

... your parts are all over the map.

First of all, the Intel processors are fairly simply better. In every way except price. MSI replacing Asus as a motherboard manufacturer is a move I'd never make. Crossfire and SLI are notorious for never being worth it. Software RAID has never worked so well. 1kw PSU for those parts is overkill.

First of all, do you want a budget system or a high powered gaming system? Or a medium powered gaming system?

I'd go with an Intel i5 2500K, Asus revised Sandy Bridge motherboard, 2x4gb DDR3, a GeForce 560Ti, 1tb SpinPoint F3 + 2tb Barracuda LowPower, Antec 750w PSU + Antec case, a DVD+-RW drive (skipping Blu-Ray is not a big deal unless you're absolutely certain you need it)...

Also, before you decide on 3D either way, spend at least a few hours staring at a 3D monitor. Not everyone can handle it, and it's an expensive feature.

Are they brand new 6850s?
What company are they from?
If they are reference cards then you can actually firmware hack them into 6870's and get a bit more out of each one

I'm pretty sure a friend of mine tried that "firmware hack" and ended up bricking the entire card (He sent it back and they didn't seem to check). If you try that make sure you know EXACTLY what you're doing.

Also, 15 fans in the case? Are you building a computer or a hovercraft?? If you need 15 fans to get good airflow you're doing something wrong.
