Oh god, the comedic timing on that carriage return. Epic.

I feel that this is an appropriate addition to this discussion!

I can still retrieve that typewriter from my old house, you know, and Christmas is coming...

Sorry, sorry; this is a totally legitimate desire, and one I encourage.

I think my folks still have an old manual typewriter in a closet somewhere; should go snoop around on the weekend...

I use to have a typewriter until a few years ago (we threw it away).

Okay, when I went over to borrow my folks' car so we could make a grocery run, I checked and dad has an old (as in reinforced cloth carry case with leather straps) Olvetti Lettera 22 (made in Glasgow!) that still seems to function fine, mechanically. No idea if the tape in it is still any good (and I have doubts if even they have any replacements anywhere in the house ;) ), but...I might have to stop by again on Saturday and test it. :)

I learned to type touch type on an old style "mechanical hammer and ink-tape" typewrite. Learning to type just as fast on a computer keyboard took a while. And I still feel I never quite got the same "feel" for typing I had on that old thing.

...same, yet I've discovered that 'old feel' can become very alien to you once you've become accustomed to electronic computer keyboards instead of mechanical keys. :)

Where I found it, on a closet shelf.

The case is in pretty good condition (likely more than 40 years old)

NOTE: all the 'missing letters' or words-with-spaces-in-the-middle are totally the fault of the rusty, dyslexic user; the typewriter's mechanisms seem to be in PERFECT working order. :)

My mom owns a very similar one. :)

Last year for Christmas my friend, without knowing my desire for one, bought me a typewriter that she found in a thrift store. It's completely operational except for not having the ribbons (well, no they're there but they're useless). And I have no idea how to buy ribbons for a typewriter. But I refuse to get rid of it because typewriter.

Most typewriters use a universal double spool ribbon. Even amazon still supplies them. for instance

Just google: "Typewriter ribbon" and you can find several specialist stores as well selling just about any type of ribbon imaginable.
