I sensed an electric field once, but then I took the coat hanger out of the socket.

No, seriously - maybe it's RF frequencies, but I can tell you if there's a muted TV or a radio with the volume turned down, or sometimes even a light on in the next room.

When I was a kid, I could tell if my father was in my room on the computer playing Eastern Front (essentially a computerized board wargame with NO SOUND) when I was still on the stairs. :)

If you are hearing a high pitched hum, this is perfectly ordinary. The CRT display works because of the high flow rate of electrons striking the display screen, and this does produce sounds near the upper limit of human hearing. Not every human has exactly the same range of human hearing, and thus it is possible that even if we try to make the sound inaudible, it still may be audible to some.

We didn't make it 10 times the upper limit of human hearing, because that would require unnecessary technology, redundant re-displays, and typical frame rates and pixel counts do not demand that high of electron striking frequencies.

As you get older, your sensitivity to high frequencies decreases, and the high-pitched hum becomes less perceivable to you.

All of that translates to:

"Healthy young people can hear an irritating whine whenever a CRT is on, but we never gave a shit. Technology is designed so as to appeal to the aging demographic that hates and fears change, and finds the 20 kHz range of frequencies a conveniently inaudible no man's land."

He just counts silently to himself, and misses his good friend who helped teach generations of children to count. *sniff-sniff*

Thanks, Mr. Nelson. Image

Whew; got a little maudlin in here; let's fix that:
