Key: The Metal Idol or Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood are both good.

Fullmetal Alchemist is amazing, yeah. Then there's Ghost in the Shell, which is good if complicated and also any Studio Ghibli film (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke etc.)
And I'll possibly be at that, depending on whether or not I go to the Manchester one.

ummm for the classic sci fi there's mobile suit gundam and space battleship yamato (which i've seen)
for the kiddy girly one there's sailor moon (which i've not seen)
for the sci fi quasi-religious mind screw there's neon genesis evangelion (which i've seen)
for the sickeningly cute there's azumanga daioh (which i've seen)
and for the completely mad and insane there's excel saga and flcl (which i'm still recovering from)
that might do you for starters

Oh yeah, Azumanga is great. I wouldn't say it's sickeningly cute though, more hilarious.

hilarious yes but there is plenty of stuff that can be considered sickeningly cute. such as when sakaki finally gets a kitten.

Shame this didn't come up a bit earlier, Lawman. I could've lent you Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and/or Cowboy Bebop while you were around yesterday. Bebop would definitely be my main recommendation.

Oh, right. I always forget Bebop because it's the obvious one.

i didn't like bebop as much (yes i'm a heretic i know). Dunno why, it just didn't quite work for me. Trigun is worth a look though as is slayers.
Re: Any LRR Fans in London (in England)?
Also worth a look, if you are partial to a large quantity of oversized boobage (also ass) in your anime, is the Witchblade remake. Surprisingly good and whilst the costumes are revealing, there is nothing overtly pornographic about it.
Not to all tastes though, I'll admit!

Well, I have the internet, and one thing I've learnt is that if I want to watch a particular TV series, it is highly likely that www.watchnameoftvseriesonline.com will allow me to do so. So I'll give that a go.

(Marmite time!) I really like Lucky Star as well, but wait till you've seen a few other anime first.
If you don't mind slow pacing, .hack//SIGN is fantastic.
Also, K-ON! falls into the same category as Azumanga, though it's not quite as good.

I'm contemplating going down to London for the RPS Social Club on the 16th.

Re: Any LRR Fans in London (in England)?
bit of a dead horse flog but did you see on twitter that graham and kathleen are coming over to london in august? events are likely to conspire against me actually being able to be part of a meet up but still woohoo
Re: Any LRR Fans in London (in England)?
I love the idea that even when the co-creator of LRR visits London that a London LRR meetup is still of questionable status!
Well, I know I'll be around, whatever. If the dates they're in town coincide with when I was due to be back to Bath, I'll simply insist that the people I was planning to visit there simply come up here instead.

Kathleen and I would really to have hangouts with you all while we're there, so we're going to plan something for one of the days we're in London.

Re: Any LRR Fans in London (in England)?
For the duration of August I will be uprooting myself from my hovel in Bath to return to my mother's slightly bigger hovel in Hertfordshire, which is significatnly closer to London. If any meet up does happen, I will count myself in.
