It took me a few episodes to get in to Universe... but once I did it became very rewarding. At the height of its powers it had a terrific atmosphere and had some terrific stories.
SG1 and Atlantis both got worse towards the end of their respective runs, but neither ever got awful.
The golden age of Stargate was roughly Series 4-5, in my opinion.
