Phew. So, Extra Credits vs. Lord Kat. This debate got ugly quickly. And I gotta say, James did not handle it well.

If anyone can spot any third parties weighing in on this, I'd love to know.

Really?

I kinda think for a man who was just insulted in an effort to attract page views, he handled it pretty decently.

By contrast, I think that claim was exactly where he first misstepped. Lord Kat's not huge, but he's got a strong following from his time on TGWTG.com. I believe his points were motivated by genuine annoyance, and the first assumption being negative wasn't a good start.

But more to the point, here's the thing: Both sides moved to shut down discussion rather than open it up. Both sides took cheap shots. I don't think Kat's innocent here. But James could have handled it better.

Plus, at some level, I expect it more from Kat. Not because of any thing, but just because he is, essentially, a net personality. James is a professional. I expected him to rise above this.

Well, I, for one, think they're both twats.

I normally like James. This time, for whatever reason, he's been poorly considered. And he did get the monocle thing wrong overall. That said, he's been flat out. More so than usual. And his friend/artist is going under the knife tomorrow. So, y'know. There's things.

It's also worth noting both parties have said "We don't hate you" on twitter, and I believe it. I think Lord Kat seriously dislikes the show, for whatever reason. And I think the EC team are (for very sensible reasons) a bit tired and on edge right now. Daniel's said openly that things got heated more quickly than they should have.

Nerds fighting nerds. It's like shoving each other in lockers and then waiting to see who stays in the longest out of spite.

This is why I only write news for sites, and don't get involved in debates. Just devolves into slapfighting.

A friend once made me and another friend (both of us big Star Wars nerds) have a sort of nerd-fight trivia-off. He told us to just take turns naming characters (from movies and expanded universe) that had met Lando Calrissian. He made us stop after we'd gone for ten minutes without either of us missing one.

I'm surprised it took this long for us to get this sort of thing going - we've had a few threads that have drifted a little to permit general conversation, but they still had been relatively short-lived.

The last forum community I'd frequented had a "Random Babbling Thread" as a sort of catch-all for things that didn't fit any existing thread, yet also didn't warrant a new thread just for it; it was one of the biggest, most frequented threads in the forum, having to go through multiple iterations due to the forum software capping the max posts in a thread. :)

...yeah - just checked; they're up to "Random Babbling 115"

ANYWAY, something I actually have to say:

My wife gave me blue balls...er, well, ONE blue ball:

Got me my third Logitech trackball 'mouse alternative' - I'd inherited a 'IBM-off-white' Trackman from my father when he adapted to the touch pads on laptops, then replaced it with a charcoal grey Trackman that skimped out the dead 'non-button' space where the scroll wheel was, and I had to get used to not using my middle finger to grasp the thing...and now I have a wireless one (which has a tiny amount of lag from time to time, but then I'm too old and slow to do anything where that will be a critical factor. ;) ) It was time when I realize the left button on the second was getting erratic; sometimes not recognizing my intended clicks, other times turning a single-click into a double...etc. *plays taps*

Also, we'd planned to get a replacement for my aging (yet still functioning fine) Logitech Wireless keyboard from...maybe nine years and four computer builds ago; went with a keyboard/mouse combo, planning to give Zyxst the wireless mouse (since her 'middle button' was starting to go), but I didn't count on the keyboard and mouse being slaved to the same wireless USB adapter  Rather than fiddle around with the settings that Logitech mentioned in the documentation, we decided to just give her my default PS/2 mouse I had hooked up as a back-up (since Windows XP didn't want to recognize a USB trackball as the primary pointing device...never bothered to check later O/S's *double blush* )

I never understood the idea of having a giant ball on a mouse. I mean, dont you move the mouse to move the pointer? What's the point of the ginormous blue ball?

Other than to show your ginormous blue ball on the internet...

Ugh.

.. I'll get my head out of the gutter now.

Moving the ball moves the cursor. His mouse will stay stationary.

I never really liked track balls. They always seem a bit hit and miss when moving the cursor.

Thanks to QI, I know that this was actually bullshit. As far as people know, Hitler had two balls. The rumor that he had one was just British propaganda.

Also, Napoleon was of average height for his time, 5'7" or thereabouts.

Yes, the mistake is caused by the fact that the French had a slightly different measuring system at the time, and the units were ever so slightly larger than those of the Imperial system. Hence, 5'2" in the French system is roughly equal to 5'7" as we measure it now. ;)

Ha, the board's font makes 5'7" look like I'm trying to say 57 inches.

MG's got it - it's sort of an 'upside down' mouse. Think back to when mice HAD balls (heh) and then turn one of them upside down and move the ball around with your finger.

Just a sec...

Image

That's the underside - the circular hole is for pushing the ball out (to clean the sensors)

A quick vid of the Logitech Wireless Trackball's use:

(click on the pic for linkie to vid; thanks for that new hosting option, Photobucket /shameless-plug)

And it DID take a little getting used to, but I find there are advantages of taking up much less desk space (where it doesn't need 'travel room') and I even find it's more precise - back when I used to FPS I'd never have trouble managing headshots or other small targets - just turn the sensitivity up and flinch my thumb the tiniest amount to adjust my aim.

Even better in flight sims; get 'straight-and-level' then rest my thumb on the top, and just slide down in any direction for a maximum pitch-yaw maneuver, and bring it back up top for center again; "easy as lyin'!" :)

It's actually like a childrens song. The type that you'd sing at school to piss off your teachers. 83

Like "Jingle Bells, Batman smells, Robin laid an egg."

I'm actually quite shocked that you thought I was serious. It's a random, British, children's song.

Wikipedia wrote:"Hitler Has Only Got One Ball" refers to the many variations on a set of lyrics to the popular "Colonel Bogey March". These are four-line lyrics making fun of the Nazi leaders using blue comedy in reference to their testicles.
