Man arrested for building nuclear reactor in his kitchen

Postby Smeghead » 04 Aug 2011, 07:28

Geez, this is the third weird news story I’ve brought up in like a week. I really hope I’m not stealing material from future feed dumps. And yet again it goes back to my own home country that has suddenly tried to challenge Florida, Germany and Japan with weird news.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-14403432

Sweden
Richard Handl a 31 year old man was arrested after the Swedish nuclear safety board contacted police about the possibility of a man being in possession of nuclear material.

Turns out he had been trying to build a nuclear reactor in the kitchen of his flat. I’ll stop and let that sink in for a moment. Nuclear reactor. Kitchen. Flat.

Most apartment complexes aren’t known for lining the flats with radiation shielding lead.

He had contacted the nuclear safety board to ask them if it was legal to build a reactor on your own, and they in turn contacted the police.
He had bought his radioactive material off the internet.

Really?..just…wow….

EDIT: More on this story. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-14406766

Uranium ore on Amazon.com.

Apparently Michio Kaku built a small particle accelerator in a shed as a kid. But really a micro-reactor would be a great way to get off the grid, surely.

Homemade nuclear reactors are not unheard of.

Therefore, War is other people.

Back in my high school science fair days, I managed to get to a national symposium. I had been studying roadkilled snakes.

One kid built a plasma generator in his kitchen. It was impressive.

My favorite part of this is actually the "Customers Who Viewed This Item Also Viewed" bit, which for this item includes:
- a Marine Corps Fighting Knife
- the Mad Hatter's Hat
- Barbie Video Girl Doll
- Fake Poop
- Starcraft 2
- a Horse Head Mask
- the Three Wolf Moon shirt
... along with a bunch of other priceless gems (metaphorically speaking).

To be fair, the digital Geiger counter makes sense. Squirrel underpants? Not so much.

Uranium ore is free if you want to dig through a tailings pile with a Geiger counter. Just don't go down any Uranium shafts. There's enough Radon down there to kill you very quickly.
