'Friday Nights' (New LRR Series)

Postby Ottoman » 27 Aug 2011, 04:40

If you are hip and cool and on the cutting edge of many hours ago, maybe you've heard about this:
@loadingreadyrun wrote:Announced at our #PAX panel: A spin-off of commodoreHUSTLE, made in association with Wizards. It's called Friday Nights. More info soon!
@loadingreadyrun wrote:The first (of hopefully more than one) season of Friday Nights will be a mini-series of 4 episodes. If it does well, we'll do more!
That's right; apparently there's going to be even more Magic-related content on LRR now.

The big question is; will it still be entertaining for people who don't like Magic but still adore the fuzzleness of LRR crew?

I wonder if this will air here, or on wizards.com.

It would have to have appeal for those who don't play Magic and don't know the Magic in-jokes. Like myself.

Something isn't right here.

Best-case scenario: 'in association with Wizards' means that either Wizards will pay to license it, or that they will give the Crew all the free cards and other materials they need to, ah, 'create an authentic and rich viewing experience'.

Good scenario: It means that Robles is going to be a character.

Meh scenario: The only significant change from the current cHUSTLE situation is that these videos have nothing to do with the E. Perhaps they say 'Wizards presents' at the beginning.

Shit scenario: The Crew is brainwashed by Gleemax and forsakes all other video projects in order to produce bland, soulless infomercials for Magic.

Jer leaves before this? Really? Talk about bad timing.

I love how they're continuing to diversify their outlets. loadingreadyrun.com, the Escapist, PATV and now Wizards.com (presumably). Wizards is going to expand their reach into a new audience, too. Soon, Graham will just be able to hire mooks to do all of his videos and sit in his penthouse office laughing maniacally while he dives into a pile of money Scrooge McDuck style.

Wouldn't it be nice if there was that kind of money available on the internet to more than a handful of people? :P

"But Wait!" cried one of the few who didn't play pokemans. "What will this spell for Hustle itself? I mean, I'd watch paint dry if it had you guys pulling goofy faces along the side, but if this were to take steam away from the regular hustle shenanigans, I'm not sure I would be a happy hippo."

as a non magic fan i am not sure about this, but i am sure that LRR would not make anything that wasn't funny and entertaining for everyone

I'm quite looking forward to this.
My thoughts are: The crew are getting to do some videos on a subject that the, personally enjoy (I'm sure they enjoy making jokes at matts expense, but don't spend all there time doing it like in some videos. where as magic is something you go out of your way to do.)

On the other hand. When i hear someone say "In association with ........." it's usually meaning "They are giving us fat stacks of cash to sell our souls for awhile."
Though that is countered by this being LRR. I trust everyone here to look at something and make sure they don't wind up in that position.

I'm also getting worried that the crew may be starting to take on a bit too much for them to handle each week. Especially now that Jer is heading off because of time commitments. I mean, granted. I would love to wake up one day and see that the front page news here was "Good news everyone! We are making enough cash now that we have all quit our jobs to work here full time!" but, that isn't going to happen right now, and with the crews work, personal lives and trying to do the 50 different series they currently have running, some of which are quite difficult and time consuming to film i imagine (Most CH's look like they take a fair amount of planning to get done as is.) What i'm trying to say here is, i don't want to wake up one morning and see that kathleen, or james, or anyone for that matter, has had to withdraw from one or two of the series due to trying to fit 25 hours of work into each day.

Then my most positive thoughts. LRR is growing. Really fast, and really large right now. In the last couple of months they reached an entirely new viewer base with Checkpoint. And because of this, there are more people looking into the rest of LRR and more people who will be donating to Desert Bus.

In all, i look forward to it. Quite alot, and i hope it works out. Because, while i trust LRR to not sell themselves for alot of cash and make crap, as evidenced with ENN, sometimes you stumble onto a goldmine, and then you realise that you're trying to sell gold to someone who's currency is based around chocolate and strawberry milk.

From what's being said, this should have absolutely no impact on cH, as it's a completely separate thing. Also, as the second tweet clearly states, this is not going to be a weekly series, at least not now. They're doing 4 episodes, which they'll likely film the same way they did Daily Drop. Take a week or two that they've planned to take off ahead of time, film it all in one go, then spread the editing over the next month or two so Graham (or Alex, since he did DD) doesn't burn out.

I don't see how they'd be selling their souls, because they basically already talk about Magic all the time. At least now they're getting paid for all the free advertising they're doing for Magic. I know the number of people they've gotten hooked or re-hooked on the game is non-zero.

As iamafish pointed above, I would watch (and have watched the equivalent of) the crew watching paint dry, so I'm super excited about another series.

That's pretty much how it went down, right?

Anyway, I wouldn't be too worried about the whole 'selling souls' thing. After all, they already have two contracts with the E, so working with Wizards is barely evil at all in comparison.

Agreed wholeheartedly. This means that these videos have an obligation to actually be interesting, but I doubt that will be much of a challenge.
