Yes, the Google thing is America only. Reddit did have a screen cap of it before it blacked out. Let me see if I can find it on google images

This is an undoubtedly silly and unrelated question, but am I the only one who thinks that looks like they put a giant fridge magnet over the logo?

Re: Stop SOPA
I'm actually surprised Youtube didn't do anything. They've been these big media companies enemy for some time and they'd probably be the first thing taken down if this went into effect. Also, it's a shame YouPorn didn't do anything, as that would have REALLY gotten some peoples attention, particularly if the protest link popped up 45 seconds into every video.

Re: Stop SOPA
For all the reading I've been doing about this there's something I still don't understand and maybe someone here could help me. Is there any difference between SOPA and PIPA? They seem to be propose the exact same thing and will have the same consequences. I'm not going to ask which is worse I just don't know what the difference between the two is

Re: Stop SOPA
There used to be a bigger difference between them, as SOPA had DNS blocking and PIPA didn't. As it stands now PIPA invests a little less control in the Justice Department for determining what's on the naughty list, gives it stronger oversight and gives site a little more wiggle room about infringed material posted to their boards rather than things they put up themselves. It's still pretty shitty, but there's some question about whether they've got a cloture proof majority on it, as Sen. Wyden and Saunders have indicated they will filibuster it if it comes to that.

I'm surprised by the number of sites participating in the protest in some way or another. At the same time, I'm surprised by some sites that don't appear to have done anything. It almost seems like people outside the U.S. are getting with the program more than people within the U.S.

And I swear I saw the Escapist advertising E3 coverage next to this weeks ZP episode, I know they censored the logo but do they plan on doing anything else?

Re: Stop SOPA
Reddit's blog has a really good technical overview of SOPA/PIPA at http://blog.reddit.com/2012/01/technical-examination-of-sopa-and.html. There is just so much crazy, such as defining all sites that end in ".com" as "domestic" and treating them as such, and all "non-domestic" sites as foreign (e.g. 'bit.ly' is foreign, because it's not registered under a "domestic" TLD or registrar).
Also, I too cannot unsee the fridge magnet now.. thanks

A quick google search informs me the ESA members include big hitters like Nintendo and Sony and it's them the mainstream media will be there to see.
The only way I can see ESA pulling its support would be if Nintendo, Sony and the other members had a vested interest in the bill not passing and right now I can't see what that interest would be as it's those members that have the perceived problem with piracy in the first place (and I know piracy is a real problem. I say perceived because it always seems to be those companies that have the biggest reactions).
I'm kind of here as well. But there is one juicy target that would do serious damage.
IGN/Gamespy/Gamespot.
We all know how much traffic they pull, how much hype they generate, and they're as vulnerable as anyone to SOPA. Email them. Everyone, email them.
If they go in for this, then it's got some legs.

Re: Stop SOPA
Huh? No.
Look: To stop these bills, alot of pols have to think their chances of being re-elected could be threatened. In otherwords, lots of people, including people who don't spend their days glued to their computers, reading tech news and videogaming websites. People who, to the extent they use the internet, only go to sites like Google, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, etc.
In anycase, most of the people who peruse IGN or any other videogaming website are quite well aware of SOPA, and have probably already signed a petition. It's quite interesting that the sites that are most vocal about "going dark" and showing solidarity are the sites that make virtually no difference in this matter.

Re: Stop SOPA
sdhonda: You're missing the point of the E3 blockout. It's aimed not directly at Congress, but at the ESA.
Companies like EA and Activision know damn well how much hype the IGamespyot amalgam wield. They're the 800lb gorilla of games journalism, with a hit count that dwarfs the rest of gaming journalism combined. If they boycott E3... well, that's a lot of the incentive to BE at E3 gone. No coverage = no hype = going there is just a waste of money.
The goal is to ultimately devalue E3 and cost the ESA money, in an effort to push it into reversing its support for SOPA. That would make a difference; a small difference, but a difference.
With the exception of Wikipedia, I'd sadly have to agree with this statement, and I think it speaks volumes about how Facebook and Google think they'll fare if it passes: They think they'll be fine. It's the little sites who'll suffer, not them.
Goddamn it, occupy Facebook! Or something.

Re: Stop SOPA
For what it's worth I've taken this idea of Graham and company's and started running with it. I already sent off an email discussing it to Gabe Newell over at Valve before having to go into work this morning. Provided I can find emails I have plenty of other people on my "list" as well.
Will anyone actually do it? No idea, but it's a plan so far out of left field and completely unexpected that it will work. It's just a matter of getting support for it, so sharing it with those who count doesn't hurt...

Re: Stop SOPA
The ESA is the gaming industry's lobbying representatives.
They are the people who supposedly fight FOR the industry in Washinton. Them supporting SOPA is sending the very wrong message that the gaming industry supports this bill, which it larely does not.

Huh? No.
Look, you're hopelessly naive if you think congress/senate care ANYTHING for their constituents - they're only interested in their payoffs from lobbyists.
SOOOO that's why we're pressuring lobbyists to drop their support - when they realize how much they could stand to lose, they'll jerk the leashes on the bought-and-paid-for senators and representatives, and sure enough, the 'pols' drop their sponsorship of the bills.
Oh, and you know what? It's working.

Re: Stop SOPA
I think today was a success, something SOPA related was trending all day in the UK section of Twitter and I saw several people on forums who didn't know what was happening become informed. A lot of neutrals have been swayed, and the uninformed, informed.
Now we just bombard the heck out of any potential E3 supporters.

It's working, alright.
Frankly, I'm impressed. The fact that a couple key politicians have already pulled support is encouraging.
The remarks of the MPAA? Not so encouraging. Or believable. It strikes me as a bunch of kids jumping up and down going "Nuh-uh, YOU'RE the doo-doo head!"

Re: Stop SOPA
I am a little disappointed at how most of the 'popular' sites that just put a banner up.
Like Google, how many people just ignore whatever doodle they do. Craigslist you only get their splash page if you go directly to craigslist.org, if you go to a link or have your local site bookmarked you dont even see the "protest."
Wikipedia is the only site most people would even notice.

Well, good for Wikipedia! While some places aren't even doing anything (Twitter, Facebook), it's good to know that one of the most popular sources for information IN THE WORLD are making such an effort.
The way I see it is, we (being the collective internet) started off very far on the losing side. Now we're fighting back, and if we can somehow convince the ESA to get on board, we'll have one hell of an advantage. SOPA, PIPA, and ACTA (the EU one) will be disastrous if they pass, but I think if we keep up this momentum we can win.
But only just...

As Christopher Titus said about his divorce, after his wife claimed domestic abuse, "apparently, 'NUH-UH!' isn't a valid legal argument."
As far as things go with the support for or against SOPA/PIPA, the final nail in the coffin is this: there is currently enough opposition that should it get through the house and senate, they CANNOT override a veto. The White House has already said that they are in opposition, so if Obama came out and said he would veto it, they would be dead in the water.

I almost wish they would pass SOPA/PIPA in some form and give the Supreme Court a chance to knock it down, precluding further attempts of this nature - which there will be as long as organizations like the MPAA have more money than sense.

It's funny that as far as I know last night was the first mention of the SOPA issue on BBC national news (referred to as anti-piracy laws) and only because Wikipedia put the black page up. Even so the story was about Wikipedia rather than SOPA.
Seriously if it wasn't for this site and one or two webcomics that I read (and Wikipedia) I wouldn't even know there was anything going on!
