this would be interesting, set a response for like 10 or 15 minutes for all servers as "this is a protest of the SOPA act, blah blah blah, it will last from 1000 to 1015 est, please read up on SOPA after we restart our servers, sincerely, the Internets.

As long as they clearly explain why it happened in small words and sentences, it's something that needs to happen. The average Facebook user doesn't know what SOPA is, or care. That needs to change.

It is a bit off topic but I would like to say that intelectual property piracy is predominantly a problem created by the creators not the consumer. There will always be people who wipl steal rather than
Pay however I think the itunes/napster model has shown that it is not joe averages unwillingness to pay that is the issue it is content creators inability to recognise new models. Music piracey has according to most reliable numbers fallen below average crime levels meaning more people steal a cd than steal a mp3. I know this wont really effect anything but its such crap, this is not a law to protect IP its a law to protect old buisness models.

I hate to side with the sopa supporters but on one point they have a case and that is it would be next to impossible to secure their current holdings and ip. The issue is, once data is out, data is out, be it songs, tv shows, movies, games, raw data... On this they have a point however the tactic they are taking to fix this is flawed in every way but the accounting books and board room. These companies exist in a digital world but are analog companies, note that even computer companies like apple and microsoft are supporting this. They dont understand that the primary reason people pirate is eas of acess.

These companies see a digital download as exactly the same as a physical copy. 1 song sold is a single out the door, not a copy made. As such they try to protect it like its physical, looking at a pirated copy of transformers III as the same as a stolen dvd from best buy is just flawed logic.

Im rehashing old rants now sorry

I totally agree with Wikipedia, Google, Facebook, Twitter, and Amazon that we need something of that magnitude to illustrate what could happen and to spread awareness.

There's so many people out there that don't read the news unless something huge makes them ask questions and so many that tune out things like this until it gets this big. I wish facebook would show more of my friend's posts regardless of what people click/comment on frequently. It's harder to get news out.

With censoring first you get the entire library closed down for someone that complained over the words "sex" and "fanny" and one image looks sorta similar to another one that is copyrighted. Then instead of eventually opening the library you risk books being burned like they did in the dark ages.

SOPA makes me physically sick and whats even worse is that the majority of people over here in the UK have no idea that this is even happening. The optimist in me tells me that if it passes it wont be that bad but the realist knows different

If it does pass and it does get used, it will be that bad, it will be a huge disruption but will be quickly repealed.

Step one: the bill gets passed
Step two: A large corporation takes down a small site
step three: a vocal group of geeks and the ACLU get up in arms but the public as a whole is divided by "well they broke the law" or "why cant the courts handle it"
Step Four: emboldened by the recent "success" with minimal outcry from the public a few more companies will each take out a few more websites.

Step five: In a uproar geeks and their well paid lawyers , keep in mind that geeks are a lot of the 1% right now, will file under sopa against every major website and search engine shutting down the internet and everyone will care.

Unfortunately at this point it will have already cost millions if not billions of dollars of lost revenue and countless jobs.

If any of you are on deviantArt and want to spread the word there you can use my journal to link to or use as reference. I can imagine they'll be hit pretty hard too if someone tosses a cease and desist at any of their many users. There's enough legit sharing on there to cause suspicion aside from the real problems that would eventually get banned anyway from the same complaints.

There was some neat SOPA talk from the panels at MAGfest. At was very wide ranging, but something that struck me was that, while many of the big entertainment companies (Sony, Nintendo, ect) have dropped their vocal support for SOPA and supposedly (but unprovably, thank you closed books) dropped some of their finical support for SOPA, the ESA to which they all belong is still throwing quite a bit of money at it. While attacking and boycotting those companies directly would have knock on effects, probably costing a lot of people who themselves may be very against the bill jobs while not touching the actual people behind the move, there might be another tack. E3, neutered though it is, is still a big money maker for the ESA. If one could convince the companies, since their so against SOPA, to boycott E3, it hits the ESA right in the balls without hurting actual companies bottom lines too much.

By the way, for those stateside LRR-ers, apparently many pro-SOPA/PIPA lawmakers are refusing to meet with people before the return to session. If you happen to have a lawmaker on the following list, give them a call and let them know that 1) you don't support the bill and 2) they really should have a least one open meeting before going back.

John McCain (R, AZ) - (602) 952-2410

Him, listen to somebody else? HAHAHAHA-MotherFucking-HA
This is the same guy who drafted with Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.) in secret a bill; and I quote
will direct American military resources not at an enemy shooting at our military in a war zone, but at American citizens and other civilians far from any battlefield — even people in the United States itself.
...said that Americans suspected of terrorism could be sent to Guantanamo.
...allowing indefinite detention of American citizens living within the U.S.

Freedom and the laws about it fall upon deafly to this man.
