^Same with me, I need adobe products for school. I use an Apple though, so most of those companies are already boycotted by me.

Oh, did I seriously miss that? Going to bed at 3.30 in the morning and waking up at 8 isn't helping my concentration apparently.

My dad was let go from Compuware. Pity, he must have fit in.

Re: Stop SOPA
It's a down right pity. I have to either gain respect for Justin Bieber, or become Pro-censorship. Quite a pickle.

Bieber is an integral part of internet culture. If we save the internet, we save him as well. Might as well love the things you hate in this battle, it's good support.

That's hardly going to work when every website you love has lost their IP address because of "piracy."

Re: Stop SOPA
Aye, there's the rub: what SOPA essentially does is forbid ISPs or Search engine sites, etc. from providing any link to a computer/site/etc. that breaks this new 'law' - you basically don't exist as far as Google or Alexa or anyone else knows.
And as for the old standby of hacker anonymity protection, I'm pretty sure they'd just START that 'do not connect' blacklist with any nymserver or similar that exists outside their jurisdiction, so a proxy isn't much help...unless you never want to access any site that's even partially under their watchful eye...

Something no one has mentions is that this bill could kill Desert Bus for anyone in America. TwitchTv would fall quickly with this bill because of all the "illegal" game streams and whatnot. Desert Bus itself is full of copyright material with all the music.

I hate this fixation on jobs. It's become a buzzword at this point. Everything is evaluated in terms of "How many jobs will this create?" or "What if this causes people to lose their jobs?" Because obviously volume is all that matters, not quality or efficiency or even economic readjustment - yeah, I'll stop ranting now. But seriously, guys, saving jobs at the cost of granting more power to the federal government like this? That's just asking for trouble.

Re: Stop SOPA
Its really not even granting power to the federal government. The terrible part about this bill is it takes power that should be reserved for the courts and gives it to the legal departments of big business.
Any copyright holder would have the power to shut down the internet access of anyone they SUSPECTED of pirating their work.

From what I understand that wouldn't help them much as they would still get blocked for anyone in the US.

Re: Stop SOPA
Not really, A LOT of internet traffic comes out of the US. Canada only has 1/10th the population and while Europe as a continent has double the population their internet usage is lower.

Re: Stop SOPA
What I am saying however is, people moving their servers to Canada so the US can't touch them. Yeah, sure they can try and block them but there are ways around. there's not way around if the servers themselves, housed on US territory, are shut down.

Re: Stop SOPA
What you have to consider is the way the internet itself is built. I believe that the data exchange between Europe and North America runs through New York, and therefore Canada would still be screwed if the US decided to filter the internet.
Now, moving your servers to European countries may keep you alive in Europe and Asia, but that is a lot of traffic you'll be losing.

Re: Stop SOPA
Plus, the new version of the bill clarifies that it ONLY applies to addresses that don't end in .com, .net or .org. It's aimed at blocking overseas sites that are harder to touch legally. As I understand it.

Re: Stop SOPA
If America decided to filter all internet traffic going through the main transatlantic cables it would cause horrendous backlash.
That said as someone living in England, while a lot of sites I visit are based in America, America is not the internet force it often believes itself to be. The people who stand to lose most if they piss off the rest of the world is America, if SOPA came in and, as would be bound to happen, a company tried to pressure a foreign government into shutting down a legitimate website due to copyright concerns the backlash would be horrific.
Also, hacktivists, they attack government computers if they feel slighted, can you imagine the response if 4chan was shut down? Ok so groups like Anonymous are a loud minority but push them enough and they will become a VERY loud minority.
