I missed the origin of the whole Africa thing. There must've been a seed moment that made it funny in the first place.

Mumblecore. They were mumblecoring the song "Africa", and everyone was just mumbling until the "Africa" part which was so much louder than the rest of the song.

Mumblecore may just be my favorite meme, in hindsight.
