There is literally nothing I can say about this that I feel pays sufficient respect to this man's memory. This is a great loss.

Sad to see the great polemicist of this era die.

I truly admired him for his wit and debating capacity. I'm really not sure a figure exists in fact or fiction to replace him, but perhaps that is a perfect state to honour his memory.

First, though i was never a huge fan of his antagonistic athism, i am deeply moved in the way he ended his life. He wrote with litle embelishment or mystery. He chronicaled his own decline in equal parts personal reflexion and scientfic detachment. He saw the end and his parh to it and described the journey with a blend of pain fear, couriosity and acceptance that seemed more human than many othe dogmas instructions of facing death. And his intructions to ignore any last-minute professions of faith as products of his own or someone elses diseased mind was powerful. I believe death-bed conversions pervert the converted and the faith alike and im happy if saddened that he had the cynical foresight to anticipate that.

Outside his death, i can say he was ar his best when he had someone, or something, firm to spar against. He tended to wear throuh these pretty quickly, so he developed a knack for making new enemies fast to replace the ones that weren't fun anymore. This might be why he settled on God and Terror...they'd stick around long enough for a good fight.

I didn't always agree with him, but he sure was a man worthy of great respect.

He had his faults, but damn if he wasn't extremely well read and a brilliant orator. The world needs more like him, not fewer.

I picked this up yesterday from the library and intend to read it cover to cover. I figure he'd find it a fitting tribute.



Leafing through it, it's a great collection of writing by a multitude of brilliant minds that I've always wanted to read anyway.

The only book of his I have is Argueably Essays.

I understand why he focused on it so much, but when it came to religon, he was preaching to the choir here. I was much more interested in his writings about American and British politics, history and literature.

Of the hundreds of hours of video I've watched or listened to over the last 2 years or so, this one is probably the best example of why I liked him and one of the best examples of how to not be pidgeonholed along ideological lines:
