Menswear
Re: Menswear
For the wedding I brought two shirts. One plain white, and one white with a faint raised stripe on it.
On trying on the one with the stripe I found that the striped sections were the same opacity as the normal shirt, and the remainder of the shirt was practically see-through. What should I wear underneath it to turn it into a wearable shirt?

Re: Menswear
a slim fitting white v-neck undershirt.
A pack of two costs about $20 at any given department store.

(you should pretty much always wear an undershirt with a dress shirt, anyhow. Saves on sweaty pits, and extends the life of your shirt.)

Re: Menswear
OTOH, if the shirt is partially see-through, are you even comfortable wearing it regularly? Perhaps it would be simply better to return it, if possible.

I might convert it to a lightweight summer overshirt, something to protect my nerdular arms from exposure to the Yellow Face

Re: Menswear
Thrifting yesterday, I found the pants to the glen plaid jacket I found earlier. They have to be let out, but now I have a casual suit - or they can be broken up into separates! I also found a pink and white bengal stripe Ralph Lauren shirt that fits beautifully, looks brand new.

Re: Menswear
Ok... I just read this entire thread.
I am never leaving this forum again.
But seriously, I have a question.
If we move on from suits to tuxedos for a second, there's something that bothers me.
I tried to wear my tuxedo shirt and bow tie the other day to a gig (it was Emilie Autumn and I was being weird). I was going to wear my red jacket over it for the 'ringmaster' look, but the jacket doesn't button anymore so I abandoned the idea. But when I tried it on, I couldn't figure out what to do with the bow tie. On a tuxedo shirt, does the bow tie go over the collar, or under it? The stiff collar of the tuxedo shirt makes it that the tie could go under it without making it bulge (because the stiff collar sticks out a little anyway), but to put the tie over it presses it in a little, yet the tie looked better over the collar in my opinion. I was just wondering if there are any rules for this that you guys know of.
I'm not posting pictures because the shirt is WAAAAY too big. I bought it for a dance presentation I was doing and I thought I would only ever wear it once, so I didn't pay much for it at all. It was seriously cheap, and the bow tie isn't one that I have to tie myself, it's got a hook and eye on it.

Re: Menswear
You're going to have to be more specific so I can understand you clearly. My default answer would be, "under the collar", but I need to make sure we're on the same page here.
It should be tie around your neck, with the inner part of the collar between it and your neck. Whatever type of collar you have, the part that hangs over... should hang over the tie. Does that makes sense?
Argh, pictures would help here...
Like that. I don't know if you have a wingtip collar or not.
Also, ties you tie yourself >>> pre-tied ties.

Re: Menswear
Yeah, it's a wing-tip collar. I should have specified that. I think it looked ok both under and over, which is why I was confused as to which way it should be.
I do prefer ties that you have to tie yourself, but the bow tie came with the shirt, so I didn't see the point of buying another, especially if all I was going to do was dance in it. It was a really cheap shirt, only cost me £15 ($25).

Re: Menswear
Now that I think about it, I guess you mean the tied part in front, and I think if it's a big one you can do either. I'm not expert with black tie, of course, but in your case it shouldn't matter too much.

Re: Menswear
I was very careful about it and I was able to find a reputable tailor to make me a suit and a few shirts before I left Bangkok. It's the one a lot of the embassy people use and had a great atmosphere, plus a proprietor tall enough to easily do my measurements. Three fittings, and more than 300 dollars later, I have probably the nicest suit I've ever owned. If you ever get the opportunity, Dinos of Sukhumwet 42, Asok Bangkok is good... but be aware that Dinos on 38 Sukhumwet is cut-rate place whose wears will fall apart under pretty much any usage. You do indeed get what you pay for
Also, I didn't have a belt for this shot, so I know it does look a little weird.

Re: Menswear
I don't know as much about the rules as some people on this forum do (which is weird considering the suit fetish that some people from when I was originally on here still seem to remember me for...) but I think that looks good. It does look weird without a belt, you're right, but it seems to fit well. Do you think you could rock it with a tie for further testing?
Also, nice smile.

... YOU BROKE THE RULES! DESTROY THE HERETIC!
actually, thank you. It's a shame the thing got wrinkled all to hell on the plane ride back. I'm itching to try it with a tie and belt.

Re: Menswear
You should! Would you pair a tie with that shirt or would you wear a different shirt with that suit?

Re: Menswear
My father gave me his Great-Uncle's pocketwatch today. It needs some cleaning and repairs (fortunately there's a couple good watch stores downtown that might be able to do it), but it's still a very nice looking watch.
Now all I need is a magnificent mustache, and I'll truly look the part of a late 19th-century country gentleman.

I used to carry an heirloom pocket watch, until I found out where they hid it during the war.

Re: Menswear
Fortunately, I don't have to worry about that with this watch. Were I to inherit a watch through my other grandfather, however, then it would be a legitimate concern.

Different shirt. Got a nice blue pin-stripe made as well.
