Re: Menswear
Ugh, eff Barney Stinson. In the modern world, there are absolutely places where it's inappropriate to wear a suit, and if you're someone who has or would say "Suit up" in any sort of seriousness, you likely look like a doofus.

My formal was last night. I'll give you all some of the highlights.
- Dude wearing thick-rimmed glasses with no lenses
- Dude wearing a plastic fedora (even when he was at the table eating dinner)
- Dude wearing a black suit and WHITE TRAINERS

I actually find it really funny... Barney Stinson as a character was obviously constructed to be a parody of a sort of hyper-masculine dude-bro manchild, a womanizer who treats women like trash, wears a suit all the time because he thinks it makes him awesome, who smokes cigars and drinks scotch but still plays laser tag and thinks having a catch-phrase is a legitimate substitute for having character. And the ironic cherry on the top of the whole thing is that this "manly man straight bro" character is being played by a gay man.
Yet somehow, people have decided that this guy is someone to idolize, something to aspire to. It'd be hilarious if it also wasn't kind of sad.

Re: Menswear
Especially considering it was explicitly explained in-universe that he does this to compensate for a crippling lack of confidence and personality.
That people try to emulate him is... well, perfectly reasonable, actually.
In other news, I'm impatiently waiting for a baseball cap to arrive in my mail. Full. Circle.

Re: Menswear
So remember the urban ninja thing a few pages back?
This is sort of related.
I've been absorbed in "A Game of Thrones" recently (prolly unhealthily so)
And I was curious if it's absurd to incorporate any of the more medieval style elements into a wardrobe without looking like I'm headed to scarborough fair?
Or am I just stupid?

Re: Menswear
Here's a question I wish I could parse a little more, uh, gently, and pose to most posters on MFA;
Do you know what the f*** you are doing?
If the answer is yes, then yes, you can likely find a way to incorporate elements from virtually any source into your wardrobe.
If the answer is no... then no. And if you have to ask...

Re: Menswear
Clearly I don't.
'Cause if I did I'd be like you and would be a board admin over at MFA.
So thanks for the advice.

Breaking in a pair of rigid Levi's 514's in a dark indigo wash.
Can't get my hands in my pockets comfortably yet, and I smell like petroleum and sulfur, and everything I sit on turns blue.
sweet.

And they're not even raw lol.
I'm probably saving up so I can get some stupid expensive jeans at Self Edge when I go to San Fran.

Re: Menswear
These ones may well actually be raw.
They're unwashed as best as I can tell, and they feel like cardboard.

Re: Menswear
If they're a "rigid" wash, it's generally one-wash. The only raws Levis does sub-$100 are STF 501s.
You'll still get decent fades.

... female interjection here... but it's a relevant question.
Since you commented on turning things blue when you sit down, do you carry a towel or something around to sit on? I have fears of wearing clothes that leave dye on things, like couch cushions or car seats... especially if I'm visiting someone else's house/office.

Re: Menswear
If I was sitting on anything I was worried about transferring dye to, I probably would use a towel.
